Focal 300 ICW6 In-Ceiling Speaker

Focal 300 ICW6 In-Ceiling Speaker

The Focal 300 ICW6 is a two-way in-wall and in-ceiling loudspeaker from Focal’s 300 Series custom installation range, developed and manufactured in France. It is built for rooms where the sound system has to disappear into the architecture: the speaker mounts flush in a wall or ceiling, the frameless grille sits almost level with the surface, and once painted the grille blends into the surrounding finish. Behind that discreet front sits a proper Focal drive-unit pairing — a 6.5 inch (16.5cm) Flax midbass driver and a 1 inch (25mm) aluminium/magnesium inverted dome tweeter — tuned for clear dialogue, natural voices and detailed music in home theatre and multi-room systems.

Because the 300 ICW6 works in both walls and ceilings, the same speaker can cover several roles in one project. In a living-room cinema it can handle surround or height channels above the seating, in a media room it can serve as a front channel in a fully concealed layout, and in a distributed audio system it delivers room-filling background and foreground music without a single speaker box on show. It is a passive design, so it connects with ordinary speaker cable to a suitable amplifier or AV receiver, with a recommended amplifier power of 25 to 130 watts and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms.

Flax cone and inverted dome tweeter

The midbass driver uses Focal’s Flax cone, a sandwich structure built around a core of natural flax fibres. Flax is light, stiff and well damped, which helps the cone stay controlled as it moves and keeps the midrange — the region that carries voices, dialogue and most musical detail — clean and uncoloured. That matters in an installed speaker, where the listener is often off to one side rather than in a single sweet spot, and where dialogue clarity decides whether a film soundtrack is easy to follow.

The tweeter is Focal’s inverted dome design in an aluminium/magnesium alloy. Inverting the dome places the voice coil at the centre of the diaphragm for better control, and the alloy combines rigidity with useful damping for detailed high frequencies without harshness. The tweeter can be rotated and its level adjusted, so the installer can steer the treble towards the listening area and balance it against the room and the mounting position — a practical advantage in ceilings, where speakers are rarely aimed directly at the seats.

Installation and room integration

Focal’s EQI (Easy Quick Install) system lets the speaker be secured by hand without conventional tools, which speeds up fitting and reduces the risk of damage to the surrounding finish. The speaker needs a cut-out diameter of 216mm and 100mm of depth behind the surface, with overall dimensions of 244mm diameter by 105mm deep, so the ceiling or wall cavity should be checked before ordering. Both a round and a square frameless magnetic grille are included, along with a protective painting mask, so the grille can be painted to match the ceiling or wall and the installation can effectively disappear.

As with any architectural speaker, placement planning is part of the result. Positions should be worked out around the seating, the screen and any ceiling joists, lights or services before the first cut is made, and cable runs should be completed while access is open. A qualified custom installer can also set the tweeter adjustment and amplifier levels once the room is furnished, which is when the final balance is easiest to judge.

System building and use cases

The 300 ICW6 is voiced to sit comfortably alongside other Focal speakers, so it can be mixed into a system with conventional cabinet speakers at the front and concealed speakers for surround and height duties, or used throughout a room for a fully hidden layout. In multi-room audio it suits kitchens, bedrooms, dining rooms and open-plan living spaces where visible speakers would compete with the interior. Its low-frequency cutoff of 45Hz (-6dB) gives useful body for music on its own, and in a home theatre it partners naturally with a subwoofer, which takes over the deepest bass while the ICW6 handles clarity, effects placement and atmosphere.

Choose the Focal 300 ICW6 if the project calls for a discreet in-ceiling or in-wall speaker that does not compromise on the qualities Focal is known for: a natural, detailed midrange from the Flax cone, an adjustable inverted dome tweeter for real rooms and real seating positions, and a tool-free installation system with paintable grilles in two shapes. Planned as part of a properly amplified system, it delivers serious home theatre and music performance from a speaker you barely see.
