Jbl Ceiling Speaker 8124

JBL Ceiling Speaker 8124

The JBL 8124 is a 4 inch, full-range, in-ceiling loudspeaker from JBL Professional’s 8100 series, designed for commercial background music and paging systems. It delivers clear, high-fidelity performance at a cost-effective point, with a high sensitivity driver that produces maximum sound levels from minimal amplifier power. A built-in 6W transformer allows connection to 70V and 100V distributed lines as well as direct 8 ohm operation, and the open-back design keeps installation simple in any ceiling application that does not require a backcan.

Key features

• 4 inch (100mm) full-range driver for clear music and paging reproduction
• High sensitivity of 93dB (1W, 1m) for strong output from small amplifiers
• Frequency range of 60Hz to 18kHz
• 6W transformer with 70V and 100V taps at 6W, 3W and 1.5W
• Wide 130 degree conical coverage, so fewer speakers cover a given area
• Dog-ear mounts for fast blind-mount installation from below the ceiling
• Open-back design for applications not requiring an in-ceiling backcan
• Contemporary sculpted grille included, in a low profile 206mm baffle

Built for distributed commercial systems

Most ceiling speaker jobs are not one speaker in one room; they are dozens of speakers across a restaurant, retail floor, office or hotel corridor, all fed from a central amplifier. That is the world the 8124 is built for. Its transformer offers 6W, 3W and 1.5W taps on 70V and 100V lines (0.75W is also available at 70V only), so the installer can set the level of each speaker zone by zone: louder over a noisy dining area, quieter in a waiting room, all on the same amplifier run. Where a distributed line is not used, the speaker also operates directly at its nominal 8 ohm impedance with a driver power capacity of 20W.

Coverage and sensitivity do the heavy lifting

Two figures explain the 8124’s efficiency. Sensitivity of 93dB at 1 watt means the speaker plays louder per watt than most ceiling speakers, so amplifier power goes further across a large installation. Coverage of 130 degrees conical is unusually wide, spreading sound evenly so listeners are not walking between hot spots and dead spots, and so a ceiling grid needs fewer units for even coverage. The 60Hz to 18kHz frequency range covers background music properly, not just speech, which is why the 8100 series is specified for restaurants and retail as often as for paging.

Installation notes

The 8124 mounts from below the ceiling with dog-ear clamps, so no access above the ceiling is needed to secure it. It requires a cutout of 175mm diameter, sits 89mm deep behind its 206mm round baffle and weighs just 1.2kg, light enough that tile rails are not required for some in-ceiling applications. Connection is by bare wires. A sculpted grille is included in the box; the MTC-8124C C-ring and MTC-Rail tile rails are available as optional accessories for suspended ceilings. Note that the 8124 is not intended for use in return air plenums.

Where it is used

JBL lists the 8100 series for restaurants, coffee shops and cafeterias, retail stores, professional offices, training rooms, lobbies and foyers, reception and waiting rooms, multi-use spaces and ancillary areas. In practice it suits any commercial space that needs even, intelligible background music and announcements from a discreet ceiling speaker: showrooms, clinics, salons, schools and houses of worship included.

For a commercial ceiling system that must sound good, install fast and run efficiently on distributed lines, the JBL 8124 remains a benchmark: a light, wide-coverage 4 inch speaker with the sensitivity to make modest amplifiers sound generous.
