The JBL MA310 is the entry model in JBL’s Modern Audio (MA) series of AV receivers, built around a simple idea: a 5.2-channel home cinema receiver should be easy to set up, easy to live with and free of features that most living rooms will never use. Five channels of low-noise Class D amplification drive a conventional front, centre and surround speaker layout, and two subwoofer outputs allow a second subwoofer to be added for smoother bass across the seating area. Four HDMI inputs handle modern 4K sources, EZ Set EQ calibrates the sound to the room, and Bluetooth covers music played from a phone.

Class D power, rated conservatively

JBL rates the MA310 at 60 W RMS per channel into 8 ohms across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band with two channels driven at 0.5 percent THD, rising to 100 W RMS per channel into 4 ohms under the same conditions. A separate FTC rating of 50 W into 8 ohms is also published. Those are honest, full-bandwidth figures rather than single-frequency headline numbers, and in practice they suit the bookshelf and compact floorstanding speakers most 5.1 systems are built from. Class D amplification also runs efficiently: maximum power consumption is 200 W and standby consumption is under 0.5 W, so the receiver generates far less heat than a traditional design of similar output and sits comfortably in ordinary AV furniture.

4K video switching and television sound

Four HDMI 2.0 inputs with HDCP 2.2 pass 4K/60 Ultra HD signals with HDR10 to the television, covering a streamer, a games console, a disc player and a set-top box without cable swapping. The single HDMI output carries the Audio Return Channel, so sound from the television’s own tuner and built-in apps returns to the receiver over the same cable that carries picture to the screen. There is no network video, no 8K pass-through and no Dolby Vision on this model, and that is deliberate: the MA310 keeps the video path focused on the 4K sources most homes actually own.

EZ Set EQ and everyday listening

Room acoustics shape the sound of a home cinema more than small differences between receivers do. Hard floors, bare walls and corner-placed speakers add boom and blur dialogue. EZ Set EQ is JBL’s room calibration system for the MA series: it measures the room and applies correction so that dialogue, effects and bass arrive in better balance at the listening position, without the owner needing to work through layers of manual equalisation. For music, Pure Direct mode removes unnecessary processing from the signal path, digital signal processing supports up to 24-bit/192 kHz, and the Bluetooth 5.1 receiver pairs with a phone or tablet for casual listening without switching the television on. One coaxial and one optical digital input, plus two stereo RCA analogue inputs, cover legacy sources such as CD players and older consoles.

Where the MA310 fits

The MA310 suits a first dedicated 5.1 or 5.2 home cinema, or an upgrade from television speakers and a soundbar to real separate speakers, and it was engineered alongside JBL’s Stage 2 loudspeaker range. Buyers who need Wi-Fi streaming, eARC, Dolby Atmos or seven channels should look at the step-up models in the MA series instead. What the MA310 offers is the core of a modern system — five powered channels, two subwoofer outputs, 4K switching and room calibration — in a slim 109 mm-high chassis weighing 5.1 kg.
