JBL Clip 5 Portable Speaker – Red

JBL Clip 5 Portable Speaker – Red

The JBL Clip 5 in Red takes the current generation of JBL’s clip-on speaker and gives it the colour that refuses to get lost. The speaker itself is the familiar formula, refined: a body small enough to hold in one hand, a wide integrated carabiner across the top that hooks straight onto a rucksack, belt loop or tent line, and a 45 mm driver backed by a passive radiator that sounds far larger than the enclosure it lives in. The Red finish is bright, deliberate and easy to spot at the bottom of a packed bag or across a campsite — practical as much as it is bold.

Under the colour, the Clip 5 hardware is identical across the range: 7 W RMS output, up to 12 hours of playtime with Playtime Boost extending it by up to 3 more, Bluetooth 5.3 with multi-point and Auracast, and IP67 sealing against dust and water. The speaker is made in part with recycled plastic and fabric, with FSC-certified paper packaging printed with soy ink.

Output that carries outdoors

The Clip 5 is rated at 7 W RMS with a frequency response of 95 Hz to 20 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio above 85 dB. That is a healthy step up from the model it replaces, and outdoors it shows as fuller midrange, clearer vocals at distance and bass with real presence from the passive radiator. It is a single full-range driver doing the work, tuned for the places this speaker actually plays: trails, beaches, cycle stops, balconies and work sites where a small speaker has to project rather than fill a quiet room.

Playtime, connections and control

The 5.32 Wh lithium-ion polymer battery (1400 mAh) runs for up to 12 hours between charges, and Playtime Boost adds up to 3 hours more by easing back the maximum level. A full charge over USB Type-C takes about 3 hours. Bluetooth 5.3 supports multi-point pairing, so a phone and a laptop can both stay connected, and Auracast allows the Clip 5 to play alongside other Auracast JBL speakers — handy when two travellers each carry one. Playback controls sit on the speaker body, so the phone can stay clipped away in a pocket.

Made to be rained on

An IP67 rating means complete dust protection and immersion resistance to a metre for 30 minutes. Clip it outside a pack in the rain, leave it by the pool, or hang it in a dusty workshop — it is built for exactly that treatment. Red also happens to be the finish that photographs well and gifts well: it reads as a considered choice rather than a default, and it marks the speaker as yours in a group of similar-looking gear.

For buyers who want the newest Clip hardware in the colour with the most character, the Clip 5 in Red is the one that stands out in every sense.
