JBL Flip 6 Portable Speaker – Red

JBL Flip 6 Portable Speaker – Red

The JBL Flip 6 is a portable Bluetooth speaker built around a two-way system that is unusual at this size: a racetrack-shaped woofer works with a separate tweeter and dual passive bass radiators, so the speaker covers the full range from one compact cylinder. This example is finished in Red. It is waterproof and dustproof to IP67, runs for up to 12 hours on a charge, and links with other PartyBoost speakers when one Flip is not enough. For listening at home, outdoors or on the move, it is designed to be carried, set down either upright or on its side, and played without any setup beyond a Bluetooth pairing.

Key features

• Two-way design: 45 x 80 mm racetrack woofer and 16 mm tweeter
• 20 W RMS woofer output and 10 W RMS tweeter output
• IP67 waterproof and dustproof, submersible to 1 metre for 30 minutes
• Up to 12 hours of playtime, 2.5 hour charge over USB-C
• Bluetooth 5.1 with PartyBoost pairing for stereo or multi-speaker linking
• Dual passive radiators for stronger low-frequency output

Two-way sound from a small cylinder

Most speakers of this size use a single full-range driver and accept the compromise at both ends of the range. The Flip 6 splits the work instead. The racetrack-shaped woofer, measuring 45 x 80 mm, handles the lows and midrange, while a dedicated 16 mm tweeter handles the top end, and passive radiators at each end of the cabinet move in sympathy with the woofer to reinforce the bass. Output is rated at 20 W RMS for the woofer and 10 W RMS for the tweeter, with a frequency response of 63 Hz to 20 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dB. In practice that separation keeps vocals and detail clear at the same time as the low end stays present, rather than one masking the other.

Battery, charging and protection

The built-in lithium-ion polymer battery is rated at 17.28 Wh, equivalent to 3.6 V and 4800 mAh, and gives up to 12 hours of music playback depending on volume and content. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours at 5 V and 3 A through the USB-C port, using the supplied 1.2 metre cable. The Flip 6 also includes USB charging protection: if the connector detects water, salt or other chemicals, an alert sound warns you to unplug and let the port dry before charging, which protects both the speaker and the power source after the speaker has been used around water.

Built for water, dust and travel

The IP67 rating means the Flip 6 is sealed against dust and can be submerged in up to a metre of water for up to 30 minutes, so rain, poolside splashes and sandy ground are normal working conditions rather than hazards. The body combines a durable fabric covering with a rubberised housing, and at 178 x 68 x 72 mm and 0.55 kg it fits in a bag or a bottle-sized space in a backpack without adding real weight. It can stand vertically or lie horizontally, depending on the surface available.

Pairing and the JBL Portable app

Bluetooth 5.1 streaming uses the A2DP 1.3 and AVRCP 1.6 profiles, and up to two smartphones or tablets can connect at once so listeners can take turns playing. PartyBoost allows two Flip 6 speakers to play as a stereo pair, or many PartyBoost-compatible JBL speakers to play together for larger spaces. The JBL Portable app adds product support, updates and sound adjustment, including bass control, from the phone.

In Red, the Flip 6 is a straightforward proposition: a genuinely waterproof portable speaker with a proper two-way driver system, a full day of battery life and the option to scale up with PartyBoost when the group gets bigger.
