The Marshall Middleton is the middle-sized portable speaker in Marshall’s range, and it is built around a simple problem with most portable speakers: they only sound right from one side. The Middleton places drivers on multiple faces of its cabinet and uses Marshall’s True Stereophonic processing to produce multi-directional stereo sound, so the music stays balanced whether you are sitting in front of it, behind it or walking around it. This Cream finish pairs that engineering with the classic Marshall look — textured covering, woven grille and brass details — in a lighter colourway that suits patios, kitchens and bright interiors.

It is also built to be taken outside and left there. The cabinet carries an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, the battery runs for more than 20 hours of playtime, and a detachable carry strap is included for moving it between rooms, gardens and sites. At 1.8 kg it is substantial enough to sound serious and light enough to carry in one hand.

Design and durability

The Middleton’s cabinet is sealed, with passive radiators handling the low-frequency output that a ported design could not protect outdoors. The grille, frame and controls are made to be handled with wet or dusty hands, and the multi-directional control knob on the top panel combines volume, play and pause, track skipping and power in a single brass-finished control that can be operated without looking at it. Bass and treble buttons sit alongside it, together with a Bluetooth pairing button and battery and level indicators. The build uses 55 percent post-consumer recycled plastic in the original specification and is PVC-free.

Sound performance

Marshall specifies a frequency range of 50 Hz to 20,000 Hz and a maximum sound pressure level of 87 dB at one metre. Two 20 W Class D amplifiers drive the woofers and two 10 W Class D amplifiers drive the tweeters, so the low end has its own power reserve instead of borrowing from the treble. The passive radiators extend the bass response for the cabinet size, and because the drivers fire in more than one direction, the tonal balance changes far less as you move around the speaker than it does with a conventional front-firing portable. Outdoors, where there are no walls to help, that radiation pattern is the difference between a speaker that sounds thin from behind and one that still sounds complete.

Battery, charging and connectivity

The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides over 20 hours of playtime and takes about 4.5 hours for a complete charge over USB-C. Bluetooth 5.1 handles wireless playback with a range of around 10 metres, and a 3.5 mm input covers wired sources. The Marshall Bluetooth app adds equalisation and over-the-air software updates. There is no built-in microphone and no voice assistant, so calls and voice control stay on the connected phone.
