Audient EVO 8 USB Audio Interface
The Audient EVO 8 is a four-input, four-output USB audio interface designed to make multi-microphone recording straightforward, at home or on location. It carries four EVO microphone preamps, each with Smartgain automatic level setting, so a small band, a podcast panel, a drum overhead setup or a singer with several instruments can be levelled quickly without repeated test takes. High-performance converters provide 113 dB of dynamic range, a JFET instrument input covers guitar and bass, and two independent headphone outputs let two people monitor at their own levels. The interface is bus-powered over USB-C and controlled through a single large rotary control with touchpoints for selecting channels and functions, keeping the top panel uncluttered.
Key features
- Four EVO microphone preamps with 58 dB of gain and 48 V phantom power
- Smartgain sets levels automatically for up to four channels at once
- 4-in, 4-out USB-C interface, bus-powered with no separate supply required
- Converters with 113 dB dynamic range for clean, detailed recording and playback
- JFET instrument input for direct guitar and bass recording
- Two independent headphone outputs alongside stereo monitor outputs
- Loopback for streaming, podcasting and combining computer audio with live inputs
Four preamps with Smartgain
Each of the four combo inputs accepts microphones or line-level sources, and the preamps are designed for an accurate, clean and true-to-source sound with low noise and low distortion. Smartgain is the headline workflow feature: select the channels, perform the loudest part of the song or conversation, and the interface measures and sets appropriate gain for all selected inputs together. That matters most on the EVO 8, because levelling four microphones by hand, one at a time, is where sessions lose momentum and where one overlooked loud passage can clip a take. Phantom power is delivered over USB, with Audient noting that a USB-C to USB-C connection supports phantom power across all four inputs, while older USB-A connections can limit simultaneous phantom-powered channels, so cable choice is part of the setup plan.
Conversion, monitoring and loopback
Conversion runs at 24-bit resolution with sample rates up to 96 kHz, and the stated 113 dB dynamic range applies to both the analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue paths. Four line outputs allow a main stereo monitor pair plus a second stereo feed, for example an alternative speaker pair or an artist mix, and two headphone outputs serve a performer and an engineer without a splitter. Monitor mix and direct monitoring keep latency low while tracking. Loopback, configured in the EVO software on Mac and Windows, merges live inputs with computer playback, which suits livestreaming, podcast recording with remote guests, online lessons and reaction or commentary formats where the computer sound must be captured alongside a voice.
Controls and portability
Instead of a row of small knobs, the EVO 8 uses Smart Touchpoints and one multifunction rotary control: tap a channel or function, then turn the dial to adjust it, with LED metering showing levels on the unit. The interface is compact and bus-powered, so it can run from a laptop in a rehearsal room, a classroom or a location recording without hunting for a spare mains socket. Compatibility covers Mac, Windows and iOS, extending the same four-preamp setup to mobile recording with a tablet or phone where the host device and connection support it. The physical design favours desks and portable rigs rather than rack mounting, and it sits naturally beside a laptop as the centre of a small setup.
Choosing the EVO 8
The EVO 8 suits creators who have outgrown two inputs: podcasters recording up to four people in the room, musicians capturing a small kit or an acoustic ensemble, streamers who need loopback plus spare inputs, and teachers recording several sources at once. It shares its preamp design, conversion performance and Smartgain system with the smaller EVO 4, so the decision is mainly about channel count and the second headphone output rather than sound quality. Planned carefully, with the right USB-C connection for full phantom power, it provides a clean and unusually forgiving front end for sessions where getting levels right quickly is worth as much as the recording itself.
