Description
Tascam Studio Bridge 24-Channel Multitrack Recorder and USB Audio Interface – The Bridge Between Console and DAW
The Tascam Studio Bridge exists to connect two worlds that studios usually have to choose between: an analogue console or outboard chain, and a computer-based DAW. It is a 24-track multitrack recorder and a 24 in, 24 out USB audio interface in one unit, with all analogue connections at line level on DB-25 connectors. There are deliberately no microphone preamps inside. The signal you have shaped with your own preamps, console and outboard gear passes through conversion and capture without another gain stage being imposed on it.
Recording happens in two ways at once, depending on how you work. Connected to a computer, the Studio Bridge is a class-compliant USB audio and MIDI interface carrying all 24 channels in both directions. Disconnected, it records all 24 tracks directly to an SD card as WAV files, which makes it equally useful for capturing a live console mix, backing up a session as it happens, or working in a room where a computer is not welcome.
Key features
- 24-track recording direct to SD, SDHC or SDXC card up to 512 GB
- 24 in, 24 out USB audio interface, 24-bit at 44.1 or 48 kHz
- 24 analogue inputs and 24 analogue outputs on DB-25 connectors
- DAW transport and record-ready control via HUI and MCU protocols
- MIDI in and out with MTC, MIDI clock and song position pointer
- Built-in metronome with dedicated click output and footswitch control
Analogue I/O on DB-25
Three DB-25 connectors carry the 24 line inputs in groups of eight, and three more carry the 24 line outputs, wired to the standard TASCAM pinout. Nominal level is plus 4 dBu with maximum levels of plus 24 dBu in both directions, so the Studio Bridge sits comfortably alongside professional consoles, patchbays and outboard processors. A breakout to XLR or TRS looms is the normal way to wire it into a studio, after which the 24 channels simply appear as line ins and outs that can be patched like any other multitrack machine, which is very much the point of the design.
Standalone recording to SD card
With a card inserted, the Studio Bridge records up to 24 tracks simultaneously in WAV (BWF) format at 44.1 or 48 kHz, in 16-bit or 24-bit, with punch-in and punch-out supported. Cards up to 512 GB give long continuous recording times for live shows, rehearsals and tracking sessions. Because the recorder and the USB interface share the same input path, a session can be captured to card as a safety copy while the DAW records the main take, removing the single point of failure that a computer represents during an unrepeatable performance.
DAW control, MIDI and timing
Transport and record-ready control from the front panel uses the HUI and MCU protocols, confirmed with major DAWs including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One and REAPER, so basic session control does not require reaching for the mouse. MIDI in and out turn the unit into a USB MIDI interface as well, and it can generate MIDI timecode, MIDI clock and song position pointer to keep sequencers, drum machines and synths locked to the recording. A headphone and local monitor output with solo checking, a metronome with its own quarter-inch click output, and dual footswitch control for hands-free punching complete a feature set aimed at working sessions rather than a spec sheet.
Where it fits
The Studio Bridge suits the studio that has invested in an analogue front end and wants multitrack capture and DAW integration without replacing it, and the live engineer who wants a compact 24-track recorder that connects to a console with standard breakout looms and no computer. Rack mounting is available with the optional rack kit, and the Settings Panel application with its meter bridge handles configuration from the computer.
It is a deliberately focused machine: line-level multitrack recording, conversion and control, done thoroughly. Studios that think in channels of analogue signal rather than in plugin chains will find that focus is exactly what has been missing between their console and their computer.
