The H&Y Revoring II, in this 67–82mm size, solves a problem every photographer and filmmaker with more than one lens recognises: filters are sold in fixed thread sizes, so a variable ND bought for one lens does not fit the next, and the bag fills with step-up rings and duplicate filters. The Revoring replaces all of that with a single filter whose mounting ring adjusts to any lens thread between 67mm and 82mm. Self-retracting blades with threaded ends expand or contract to the lens, overlap to block light leaks, and lock the filter in place.

This second-generation model combines a variable neutral density filter and a circular polarizer in one unit. The variable ND spans ND3 to ND1000, which is 1.5 to 10 stops of light reduction, adjusted by rotating the outer ring against a hard stop at the maximum setting. The polarizer rotates independently, with its own locking control, so exposure and polarization can be set separately and then held.

How the Revoring mount works

The mount is the invention here. Instead of a fixed thread, a set of retractable blades forms a variable-diameter threaded interface: twist and press the filter onto the lens and the blades settle into the thread, anywhere in the 67 to 82mm span. The threaded ends overlap, which removes the gaps where stray light can enter behind a filter and fog a long exposure. A safety locking arrangement on the Mark II holds the fit securely during handling, so the filter stays put when the camera is carried between positions. Markings between MIN and MAX on the ND ring relate density to focal length, because the stops achieved at a given ring position vary with the lens in use.

Exposure and polarization control

For video, the variable ND is what allows a 180-degree shutter angle to be held in bright daylight at a wide aperture: the density is trimmed continuously until the exposure is right, rather than in the fixed steps of a filter set. For stills, the same range opens up wide-aperture portraiture in full sun and long-exposure effects such as blurred water and streaked clouds. The circular polarizer works alongside it, reducing reflections from glass and water, deepening sky tones and increasing colour saturation. Because the two controls lock independently on the Mark II, a polarizer angle found for a scene is not disturbed while the ND is adjusted for a cloud passing overhead.

Optical quality and handling

The filter glass is German Schott B270, coated with nine layers on both sides combining anti-reflective and nano-coating technology to maintain light transmission and control flare, with a hydrophobic, anti-fingerprint finish that is easier to keep clean in the field. The frame is architectural-grade aluminium with a matte black anodised finish, and the 67–82mm Mark II unit weighs about 145 grams, so it adds little to a lens that already takes an 82mm filter. The polarizer’s Nitto film is the component behind the published 99.9 percent polarization efficiency figure.
