The Stage 250B is the larger of the two bookshelf models in JBL’s Stage 2 range, engineered at JBL’s Acoustic Engineering Center of Excellence in Northridge, California. It is a two-way design pairing a 5.25-inch polycellulose ribbed-cone woofer with a 1-inch anodized aluminium dome tweeter, and it is voiced to work either as the main speakers in a stereo or front-channel role or as surround speakers in a Stage 2 home theatre system. The tweeter sits in JBL’s Next Generation HDI waveguide. HDI – High-Definition Imaging – is the horn geometry JBL developed for its professional and flagship speakers; the waveguide controls how high frequencies spread into the room, improving directivity, reducing diffraction effects and keeping the response neutral both on axis and off to the sides. In practice that means a stable stereo image and consistent detail even when you are not sitting in the exact centre seat.

Designed for Real Rooms

A bookshelf speaker lives on furniture, on stands, sometimes close to walls – and the 250B’s details acknowledge that. The flared rear port lowers the speed of air leaving the cabinet, which removes the chuffing noise a hard-working small port can make on bass-heavy passages. Anti-slip pads keep the cabinet from creeping on a shelf when it plays loud. Sensitivity of 86dB and a recommended amplifier range of 20 to 150 watts make it an easy partner for most AV receivers and stereo amplifiers.

Building a Stage 2 System

Used on their own, a pair of 250Bs covers stereo music in small and medium rooms without needing a subwoofer for most listening.
