Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X Studio Headphone, Open Systems

Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X Studio Headphones

The beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X is an open-back, circumaural studio headphone built around the STELLAR.45 driver, a 45 mm design developed for this PRO X generation. It covers 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz, has a 48 Ohm impedance that works properly from audio interfaces, laptops and portable players, and ships with two detachable mini-XLR cables, 1.8 m and 3 m. Velour ear pads, a spring-steel headband with memory foam and replaceable parts throughout mark it as a working studio tool, handmade in Germany.

The STELLAR.45 driver

STELLAR.45 is a dynamic driver with a triple-layer diaphragm and a neodymium magnet system, designed for high efficiency and low distortion at the levels studio work demands. Total harmonic distortion is 0.04 percent at 1 kHz (1 mW), and short-term maximum input power is 100 mW with a rated continuous figure of 30 mW, so the headphone has real headroom for transient peaks without hardening. The wide response reflects a driver that stays controlled and linear across the audible band, which makes small balance and equalisation decisions in a mix trustworthy.

Open-back sound for mixing decisions

An open design vents the ear cup instead of sealing it, so sound does not reflect inside the cup and the stereo image takes on a more natural sense of width and depth. For mixing and mastering that matters: panning, reverb tails and the placement of a vocal in a mix are easier to judge than on a closed headphone of similar cost. The DT 900 PRO X leaks sound to the room and lets room sound in, so it belongs in a quiet studio or listening room, not for tracking next to a live microphone or for a shared office.

Comfort and build

At 345 g without cable, with soft velour pads and a headband pressure of 5.3 N distributed by memory foam padding, the DT 900 PRO X is shaped for long sessions. The single-sided cable entry keeps the lead out of the way at a desk, and the locking mini-XLR connector means a tug does not pull the cable free mid-take. Construction uses a metal headband and hard-wearing materials, and the parts that wear, ear pads, headband padding and cables, are all interchangeable.

Working with it day to day

The two supplied cables cover the main uses directly: the 3 m cable for a fixed interface or console position, the 1.8 m cable for a laptop, controller or portable player at closer range, each ending in a 3.5 mm plug with a 6.35 mm adapter. A carrying bag is included for moving between rooms or studios. Choose the DT 900 PRO X when the job is critical listening, mixing or mastering in a quiet space and the priority is an honest, open presentation that travels between devices without needing a dedicated headphone amplifier.
