Why compression at the preamp stage helps

A compressor inside a plug-in works on audio that has already been converted, so it cannot rescue a clipped recording. The OctoPre Dynamic compresses in the analogue domain, before conversion: set a gentle amount on a drum overhead, a vocal or a bass amplifier and transients are tamed while the signal is still analogue, protecting the take and often removing the need for heavy processing later. A more aggressive mode is available per channel for sources that want audible character, and because every channel has its own compressor, the kit can be treated piece by piece rather than as one stereo group.

Connecting and clocking the expansion

One or two optical cables carry the eight channels to your interface over ADAT, with the number of channels reducing at the highest sample rates as ADAT requires. The OctoPre Dynamic can run from its internal clock or lock to an external system through word clock, and the analogue line outputs mirror the preamp signals for zero-latency monitoring or live splits.
