Description
McIntosh MA8950 Integrated Amplifier
The McIntosh MA8950 is a 200-watt-per-channel integrated amplifier that brings the company’s amplification and preamplifier technologies together in one chassis. It succeeds the award-winning MA8900 and improves on it in meaningful ways: the power supply’s filter capacity has been doubled, lifting dynamic headroom from 2.0 dB to 3.1 dB for a greater ability to reproduce musical peaks with less distortion, along with stronger bass playback and low-end control. Upgraded power supply components and a new generation of audio-grade circuit parts round out a design aimed squarely at the heart of a serious two-channel system.
What sets an integrated amplifier like this apart is how much it removes from the rack. Inside the MA8950 are a preamplifier, a power amplifier, a phono stage for both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, a headphone amplifier, and a full digital section with its own DAC — so a turntable, a streamer or computer, a TV, and a CD or SACD transport can all connect directly, with nothing else required but speakers.
Key Features
- 200 Watts per channel delivered through the McIntosh Autoformer, with full rated power into 2, 4 or 8 Ohm speakers
- DA2 Digital Audio Module: 7 digital inputs (2 coaxial, 2 optical, 1 USB, 1 MCT, 1 audio-only HDMI ARC), a Quad Balanced 8-channel 32-bit DAC, decoding up to 24-bit/192kHz and DSD512
- 9 analog inputs: 1 balanced, 6 unbalanced, a Moving Coil phono input with adjustable loading, and a Moving Magnet phono input
- Discrete 5-band analog tone control: plus/minus 12 dB in 2 dB steps at 30 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 2 kHz and 10 kHz
- Power Guard, Sentry Monitor fuse-less short-circuit protection, and McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks
- High Drive headphone amplifier with Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD) for speaker-like headphone listening
- Home Theater PassThru for seamless integration with a surround system, plus Power Control for coordinated system power on and off
- Roon Tested device; classic McIntosh styling with black glass front panel, blue watt meters, illuminated logo, aluminum end caps and polished stainless steel chassis
The Autoformer: full power at any impedance
Most amplifiers deliver their rated power into one impedance and less into others. The MA8950’s output passes through a pair of McIntosh Autoformers — output transformers wound for the specific demands of transistor amplification — which match the amplifier to the connected speakers. The practical result is that your loudspeakers always receive the full 200 Watts per channel whether they are rated at 2, 4 or 8 Ohms, with the current drive and control the music needs regardless of the speaker’s electrical character.
DA2 digital module and future-proofing
The MA8950 ships with the DA2 Digital Audio Module rather than the earlier DA1. Its Quad Balanced 32-bit DAC is a step up in dynamic range and distortion performance, and its seven digital inputs cover nearly any modern source: a TV connects through the audio-only HDMI ARC input (with CEC so the McIntosh remote can control the TV’s power and volume, and Dolby and DTS formats converted to proper two-channel playback), a computer or streamer through USB at up to DSD512, and a McIntosh MCT-series SACD/CD transport through the dedicated MCT input for the cleanest possible DSD transfer. Because the module is removable, it can be replaced with a future McIntosh digital module as formats evolve — a genuine hedge against digital obsolescence in an amplifier built to last decades.
Where the MA8950 fits
This is the center of a reference-grade two-channel music system: pair it with quality floorstanding speakers and add a turntable, a streamer and a CD transport to cover every format. The adjustable-loading moving-coil stage makes it a strong match for serious vinyl rigs without an external phono preamp. Through HDMI ARC it elevates TV and film sound dramatically over any soundbar, and with Home Theater PassThru it can share its front channels with an AV receiver so the same speakers serve both stereo and surround duties. For late-night listening, the High Drive headphone stage with HXD crossfeed presents headphone sound with the added dimension of speaker listening.
