VSSL A.6X 6-Zone Multi-Zone Streaming Amplifier

VSSL A.6x Six-Zone Streaming Amplifier

The VSSL A.6x is a six-zone streaming amplifier for whole-home audio, putting twelve channels of Class D amplification (50 watts per channel into 8 ohms) and a full streaming platform into a 2U rack chassis. Every zone can play its own stream — AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, Alexa Cast or Bluetooth — or join a party group, and each zone also accepts local sources through the matrixed analogue inputs. It is built for custom-installation projects where one rack unit serves the whole house.

Key features

• 6 zones / 12 channels of amplification
• 50 W per channel into 8 ohms, Class D
• AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect
• Alexa Cast and Bluetooth streaming
• 6 matrixed analogue inputs plus optical and network
• 7-band EQ per zone
• 2U rack-mount chassis, Ethernet controlled

Streaming without a proprietary app wall

VSSL’s design choice is to speak the platforms people already use rather than locking control into one app: any AirPlay 2 device, Chromecast sender, Spotify client or Alexa device sees the A.6x zones as targets. The VSSL app handles setup, grouping, volume and EQ, and zones can be renamed to rooms so voice assistants address them naturally. Because casting is native, a guest’s phone works the same way the owner’s does.

Matrix inputs for local sources

Beyond streaming, six analogue inputs can be routed to any zone — a television in the family room, a turntable preamp, a cable box — plus an optical input, an IR input and a network stream input. Six analogue outputs mirror the zones for feeding additional amplifiers or subwoofers, and a network output shares sources with other VSSL units in larger installations.

Amplification and sound

Each of the twelve channels delivers 50 W RMS into 8 ohms, with a signal-to-noise ratio above 101 dB and a frequency response of 20 Hz to 50 kHz. A 7-band equaliser per zone compensates for room and speaker differences — in-ceiling speakers in a kitchen need different treatment from patio speakers — and zone volume limits protect speakers and neighbours.

Installation notes

The A.6x is a 17-inch wide, 2U rack unit (17 x 3.46 x 14 inches) and requires a wired Ethernet connection: streaming six zones reliably is a network job, and VSSL specifies Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi for the amplifier itself. Control integrations for common home-automation platforms are supported for keypad and app control.

A.6x or multiple smaller amplifiers

The alternative to one A.6x is a stack of individual streaming amplifiers, one per zone. The single-chassis approach wins on rack space, power supplies, network ports and unified grouping — and on the ability to share the six wired sources with every zone, which separate amplifiers cannot do without additional matrix hardware. For projects of three zones or fewer, VSSL’s smaller models cover the same platform at a lower entry point.
