The Polk Audio Reserve R300 is a compact centre channel speaker from Polk’s Reserve series, finished here in Brown. At only 19 inches wide it fits beneath most televisions and inside typical AV furniture, yet it uses the same flagship transducer array as the larger Reserve models: a 1-inch Pinnacle Ring Radiator tweeter flanked by two 5.25-inch Turbine Cone woofers. Tweeter and woofer technology

The Pinnacle Ring Radiator’s distinctive pointed waveguide shape spreads high frequencies broadly around the room, widening the sweet spot so viewers sitting off to the side hear the same clarity as the person in the middle. Its critically damped rear chamber controls resonances that would otherwise colour the sound. The Turbine Cone woofers combine a foam core with a moulded turbine geometry that increases stiffness and damping without adding mass, which suits the midrange region where the human ear is most sensitive and where dialogue intelligibility is decided. The crossover hands over between woofers and tweeter at 2,200 Hz.

Sealed cabinet, honest bass

Unlike a ported centre speaker, the R300’s fully sealed enclosure eliminates the turbulence of escaping air, so there is no chuffing or port distortion behind quiet dialogue passages. The specified response runs from 65 Hz to 38 kHz within 3 dB limits, with an overall response of 45 Hz to 50 kHz, so the R300 blends cleanly with a subwoofer handling the deepest bass through the receiver’s bass management. The cabinet sits on rubber pads and connects with a single pair of nickel-plated five-way binding posts.

Placement and system matching

Place the R300 on a shelf or cabinet directly above or below the screen, aimed at ear height where possible, and keep its front face at or slightly ahead of the furniture edge so the sound is not reflected off the surface in front of it. It is a passive speaker and needs an AV receiver or amplifier; Polk recommends 70 W or more per channel for the best results, within the 30 to 200 W recommended range. Amplifier output compatibility covers 8, 6 and 4 ohm settings, and the minimum impedance is 3.8 ohms. Paired with Reserve towers or bookshelf speakers at the front, it completes a tonally consistent front stage.
