Honeywell HDMI AOC 2.1 Cable, 15 Metres

This Honeywell cable is a 15 metre active optical HDMI cable built to the HDMI 2.1 specification. An active optical cable, usually shortened to AOC, carries the audio and video signal as light over fibre optic strands inside the cable instead of as an electrical signal over copper conductors. That construction is what makes the combination in this specification possible: the full 48 Gbps bandwidth of HDMI 2.1, supporting Ultra HD resolutions up to 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz, maintained over a 15 metre run between source and display. A passive copper cable cannot sustain that bandwidth at this length, so for long connections between a rack, a console or a media player and a TV or projector, an active optical design is the appropriate type of cable. The cable is male-to-male, with HDMI connectors at both ends.

Key features

• HDMI 2.1 active optical cable (AOC) using fibre optic transmission
• 15 metre length for rack-to-display and room-scale installations
• 48 Gbps transmission speed, the full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth
• Supports UHD resolution up to 8K at 60 Hz, and 4K at 120 Hz
• Male-to-male HDMI connectors at both ends
• Slim, flexible fibre construction that routes more easily than thick long-run copper cable
• Immune to electromagnetic interference along the cable run
• Compatible with TVs, projectors, gaming consoles, AV receivers and computers with HDMI

Why active optical at 15 metres

HDMI signals weaken as cable length increases, and the effect grows with bandwidth. At the 48 Gbps that HDMI 2.1 requires for 8K at 60 Hz or high-refresh 4K, a passive copper cable is limited to short lengths before the picture drops out, sparkles or falls back to a lower mode. An AOC converts the signal to light at the source connector, sends it over fibre with negligible loss across the 15 metres, and converts it back at the display end. The fibre itself does not pick up electromagnetic interference from power cables, lighting or motors along the route, which is a common cause of intermittent faults in long installed runs. The cable is also noticeably slimmer and more flexible than an equivalent long copper cable, making it easier to pull through conduit and around the bends of a real room.

Resolution and bandwidth in practice

With 48 Gbps available, the cable carries the display modes that define current equipment: 8K televisions and projectors at 60 Hz, and 4K at up to 120 Hz, the mode used by current games consoles and gaming PCs for high-refresh play. HDMI 2.1 features supported by the connected devices, such as enhanced audio return for sending TV sound back to a receiver or soundbar over the same cable, variable refresh behaviour and dynamic HDR formats, pass over this link provided both the source and the display implement them. The cable is also backward compatible with earlier HDMI equipment, which will simply operate at the modes those devices support, so the same installed run can serve a system as its components are upgraded over time.

Installation notes

Active optical cables are directional: the ends are intended for the source and the display respectively, so the orientation should be checked before the cable is pulled into place, and the run should be tested with the actual source and display before any trunking or conduit is closed. Fibre cable should be bent gently rather than kinked, kept within generous bend radii at corners, and the connectors should not be used to pull the cable through tight routes. Typical installations for a 15 metre length include home cinema rooms where the projector sits at the rear and the equipment rack at the front or in a cupboard, living rooms where a console or media player sits away from a wall-mounted TV, and meeting rooms, classrooms and display installations where the presenting computer is across the room from the screen.

Compatibility

The cable connects any HDMI source to any HDMI display: televisions, projectors and monitors on one side, and gaming consoles, computers, media players, set-top boxes and AV receivers on the other, exactly the device range listed for this cable family. To actually use 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz, both connected devices must support those modes; the cable provides the bandwidth, and the devices decide the picture. For a long, single-cable link that has to carry today’s highest-bandwidth HDMI signals without repeaters or signal failures, this 15 metre active optical cable is the correct category of product.
