MXP-38 Stereo Male Connector Heavyduty

MX P-38 6.35mm Stereo Male Connector Heavy Duty

The MX P-38, listed as the MXP-38, is a heavy-duty 6.35 mm stereo male plug for building and repairing audio cables. It is a TRS connector — tip, ring and sleeve — so a single plug carries a stereo unbalanced signal or a balanced mono signal, depending on how the cable it terminates is wired and what it is plugged into. Connectors of this size are the standard fitting on studio headphones, instrument and patch cables, keyboards and mixer connections, which makes a solder-on plug like this one a workshop staple: when a cable fails at the plug, or when a cable needs to be a specific length that no ready-made lead matches, the P-38 is the part that finishes the job.

Key features

• 6.35 mm stereo male plug in TRS configuration
• Heavy-duty die-cast metal housing
• Gold-plated tip contact, with gold and nickel contact plating listed for the connector
• Precision-machined one-piece tip contact
• Chuck-type cable clamp strain relief
• Solder termination with accessible solder tabs
• Accepts microphone and instrument cables up to approximately 6 to 7 mm in diameter

Why the housing and contacts matter

A plug lives a harder life than the cable behind it. It is pushed in and pulled out, stepped on in the dark, dropped on hard floors and left plugged in under tension. The P-38 answers that with a full metal die-cast housing, listed as die-cast zinc alloy, which resists the cracking that ends the life of plastic-bodied plugs and holds its shape around the contact assembly. Inside, the tip contact is precision machined as one piece, which the listing notes prevents the hook-up inside a jack that can occur with cheaper two-piece tips. Contact plating is listed as gold and nickel, with a gold-plated tip: the point of plating on a working connector is a contact surface that resists oxidation, so the plug keeps making a clean, low-resistance connection after repeated use rather than developing the crackle that comes from corroded contacts.

Strain relief and soldering

Most cable failures happen at the point where the cable enters the plug, because that is where every tug and bend concentrates. The P-38 uses a chuck-type cable clamp as its strain relief: the clamp grips the cable jacket itself, so pulling force is taken by the jacket and the clamp instead of by the solder joints inside. Termination is by soldering, with large solder tabs that the listing describes as easy to work on, including for users who are not soldering every day. Wire the three conductors to tip, ring and sleeve according to the job the cable is for — left, right and common for a stereo lead, or signal positive, signal negative and screen for a balanced lead — then close the housing down over the clamp so the finished plug is a single solid assembly.

Where the P-38 is used

The listing identifies three main jobs. The first is repair: replacing the broken 6.35 mm plug on studio headphones or on an existing instrument or patch cable returns a good cable to service instead of discarding it. The second is custom cable making — balanced TRS patch cables for studio monitors, mixer inserts and rack wiring, and stereo leads for keyboards connecting to a mixer. The third is general instrument work for musicians, where the same plug format appears across keyboards and effects setups. The listing also answers a common question directly: although guitars normally use mono TS plugs, this stereo plug will work in a guitar jack with the ring contact simply unused. In every case the requirement is the same — a standard 6.35 mm stereo jack on the equipment, which is the fitting found across professional audio gear.

Choosing a solder-on plug

A solder-on connector like the P-38 suits anyone who wants a cable that can be repaired again later: if the cable is damaged near the plug in future, it can be cut back and re-terminated on the same plug. Check the diameter of the cable you intend to use against the approximately 6 to 7 mm the housing accepts, dress the conductors neatly so no stray strand can bridge the contacts, and test the finished cable before it goes into a working rig. Built that way, a cable terminated with a heavy-duty plug of this type becomes part of the permanent kit rather than a consumable.

The MX P-38 is a straightforward professional component: a metal-bodied, gold-tipped TRS plug with proper cable clamping, made for cables that are built, repaired and relied on.
