Why terminate speaker wire at all

A binding post will accept bare wire, but it is not kind to it. Strands spread under the clamp, some escape and risk touching the neighbouring terminal, and the exposed copper dulls with oxidation over time. A banana plug gathers every strand into a single solid contact that seats fully in the post, presents the same connection area every time, and keeps the two polarities physically separated. The audible benefit is simply a connection that stays as good as the day it was made, and the practical benefit is that swapping an amplifier, moving a speaker or testing a fault takes seconds instead of a screwdriver session behind the rack.

Fitting the plugs

Strip a short length of insulation from the speaker cable, twist the strands neatly, insert them into the plug body and tighten the screw fitting down onto the conductor. Check polarity as you go: the red plug belongs on the positive conductor at both the amplifier end and the speaker end, and the cable’s own polarity marking should line up with it.
