Sony WH-XB910N EXTRA BASS Headphone (Blue)

Sony WH-XB910N EXTRA BASS Headphone (Blue)

The Sony WH-XB910N is an over-ear wireless headphone from Sony’s EXTRA BASS range, built for listeners who want strong low-end weight without giving up noise cancelling or long battery life. This listing is the Blue finish. A 40 mm dynamic driver with a neodymium magnet handles playback, and Sony’s Dual Noise Sensor technology works to reduce surrounding sound while you listen. The closed, dynamic design seals around the ear, and a detachable cable is included so the headphones can also be used wired when the battery runs down or with sources that have no Bluetooth.

Key features

• 40 mm dynamic driver tuned for EXTRA BASS low-end emphasis

• LDAC, AAC and SBC codec support, plus DSEE upscaling and 360 Reality Audio
• Quick charge: about 4.5 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge

Sound and EXTRA BASS tuning

Sony specifies a frequency response of 7 Hz to 25,000 Hz in wired operation, extending to 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz over Bluetooth when LDAC is used at 96 kHz and 990 kbps. The EXTRA BASS tuning lifts the low frequencies, which suits electronic, hip-hop and pop recordings where kick drums and bass lines carry the track. DSEE, Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine, is on board to restore detail that is lost when audio files are compressed. Support for 360 Reality Audio allows compatible content to be played back in an immersive spatial format. Impedance is rated at 48 ohms with the power on and 16 ohms with the power off when connected by cable, with sensitivity of 96 dB/mW in both states.

Noise cancelling and awareness

Dual Noise Sensor technology uses two microphones to pick up ambient sound so the cancelling circuit can counter it more accurately. A noise cancelling on and off switch is provided, and an Ambient Sound mode lets outside sound through when you need to hear announcements or traffic. Quick Attention lowers the volume and lets conversation in when you place a hand over the right earcup. Adaptive Sound Control can adjust the ambient settings automatically based on your activity and recognised locations, and the settings can also be managed manually in the Sony Headphones Connect app.

Comfort, design and controls

The WH-XB910N weighs approximately 252 g. Soft earcups with synthetic leather and urethane cushioning sit around the ears, and the headband is adjustable for different head sizes. The earcups swivel and the design folds for storage in the supplied carrying case. Playback, volume and calls are handled through a touch sensor on the earcup, using taps and swipes, and a built-in microphone with Precise Voice Pickup technology handles calls. Voice assistant access is available for compatible assistants on a connected device.

Battery and connectivity

A full charge takes approximately 3.5 hours over USB and gives up to 30 hours of music playback with noise cancelling on, or up to 50 hours with it switched off. Communication time is rated at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on. Bluetooth 5.2 provides a line-of-sight range of about 10 metres, with A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles. Multipoint allows two Bluetooth devices to stay connected at the same time, and Fast Pair and Swift Pair simplify first connection with Android and Windows devices. The supplied single-sided detachable cable is approximately 1.2 m long with a gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini plug.

For everyday listening at home, commuting and travel, the WH-XB910N combines bass-led tuning, dual-sensor noise cancelling and two-day battery potential in a foldable over-ear frame, with wired playback as a backup whenever wireless is not practical.
