Ahuja Wireless Mic AWM495VL

Ahuja Wireless Mic AWM495VL

The Ahuja AWM-495VL is a compact, lightweight single-channel VHF wireless microphone system built around a bodypack transmitter and a tie-clip lavalier microphone. The VL configuration is the hands-free version of the AWM-495 family: the small condenser tie-clip microphone pins to a shirt, lapel or saree edge, the bodypack transmitter sits on a belt or in a pocket, and the speaker is free to move, gesture and turn without holding a microphone or staying near a lectern cable. It is a public address system in the classic Ahuja sense, designed for clear speech reinforcement in halls and gatherings rather than for studio recording.

Key features

• Single-channel VHF wireless system for hands-free speech
• Bodypack transmitter with tie-clip lavalier microphone
• Quartz crystal locked VHF high band operation
• Available in different operating frequencies
• Internal antenna in the transmitter, telescopic antenna on the receiver
• Audio output through a 6.3 mm jack socket on the receiver
• Transmitter runs on two 1.5 V AA cells
• Receiver runs on 12 V DC through the AC adaptor supplied with the system
• Two-position ON/OFF slide switch on the transmitter

Hands-free speech for PA work

A lavalier arrangement changes how a speaker can work a room. Teachers can write on a board and walk between rows, presenters can demonstrate products with both hands, religious speakers and stage performers can move naturally, and panel members can be heard evenly without passing a handheld microphone around. Because the microphone sits at a fixed distance from the mouth, the level reaching the PA system stays more consistent than with a handheld microphone that drifts closer and further away as the speaker moves. The AWM-495VL is listed by Ahuja for PA applications including stage and auditorium use, seminar halls, places of worship and recreation centres, and that speech-first brief is exactly what the system is tuned for, with a system frequency response of 50 to 15,000 Hz covering the full range of the speaking and singing voice.

Receiver, transmitter and setup

The receiver is a compact desktop unit with a telescopic antenna for reception and a 6.3 mm jack socket providing the audio output to a mixer, amplifier or powered PA speaker input. It operates on 12 V DC through the AC adaptor supplied along with the system. The bodypack transmitter carries its antenna internally, runs on two 1.5 V AA pencil cells that are simple to keep as spares, and has a two-position ON/OFF slide switch. Quartz crystal locking holds the operating frequency stable, and Ahuja supplies the system in different frequencies, which matters when more than one wireless system is used in the same building or when a neighbouring venue already runs VHF equipment. Before an event, confirm the frequency marked on the supplied unit and walk the full speaking area while listening for dropouts, with the receiver placed in clear view of the transmitter and away from large metal surfaces.

Using it well

Clip the lavalier microphone centrally on the chest, roughly a hand’s width below the chin, with the cable routed under clothing where possible so it does not swing or rustle against fabric. Set the amplifier or mixer level with the loudest expected speech, keep fresh AA cells in the transmitter for important events, and switch the transmitter off between sessions to preserve the batteries. Licensing of wireless microphone frequencies is the user’s responsibility and depends on the application and the frequency selected, so the operating frequency of the supplied unit should be checked against local requirements before use in a new venue or city.

For schools, halls, places of worship and event venues that need one speaker amplified clearly with complete freedom of movement, the AWM-495VL offers the simplest form of that solution: a bodypack, a tie-clip microphone and a compact receiver that connects to the PA equipment already in the room.
