The Behringer ECM8000 is an ultra-linear measurement condenser microphone built for one purpose: to hear a room or a loudspeaker exactly as it is, so that an analyser can show what needs correcting. Why measurement microphones are omnidirectional

Sound in a room arrives at the listening position from every direction: directly from the loudspeakers and reflected from walls, floor and ceiling. A cardioid microphone would reject much of that reflected energy and report a response that no listener actually hears. The ECM8000’s omnidirectional pattern samples sound evenly from all around the capsule, which is what a room measurement requires. Its flat response matters for the same reason: any peak or dip in the microphone’s own response would be indistinguishable from a peak or dip in the system being measured, and the whole exercise depends on the microphone adding as little character of its own as possible.

Connection and powering

The ECM8000 is a condenser microphone and requires phantom power, accepting any supply from +15 V to +48 V, which covers the standard 48 V phantom output of mixers, interfaces and dedicated measurement preamps. Its balanced output is on a gold-plated 3-pin XLR connector for reliable signal integrity over a standard microphone cable. The transformerless FET input stage keeps noise low and avoids the low-frequency distortion a transformer can introduce, which matters when the microphone is measuring bass response down to 15 Hz.

Measurement workflow

A typical session mounts the ECM8000 on a stand at the listening position, capsule vertical, and feeds it to an analyser or to software such as a room measurement package running test sweeps or pink noise. The resulting response curve shows where the room and speakers combine to boost or cut parts of the spectrum, and the engineer corrects with equalisation or by moving speakers and seating. Because response varies with position, serious work averages measurements from several points around the listening area rather than trusting a single spot.
