The NEUMANN TLM 49 Large-Diaphragm Studio Microphone is a warm, cardioid vocal microphone with the K 47 capsule of the U 47 and M 49, in fine matte nickel with EA 3 suspension.
K 47 capsule from the legendary U 47 and M 49
Warm vocal sound with a gentle presence boost above 2 kHz
Cardioid leaning to supercardioid for strong off-axis rejection
Transformerless FET circuitry with 12 dB-A self-noise
The NEUMANN TLM 49 Large-Diaphragm Studio Microphone is a cardioid studio microphone with a warm sound optimised for vocal performance, supplied as a set with the EA 3 elastic suspension. Inspired by the legendary M 49 and M 50 microphones of the 1950s and finished in Neumann’s typical fine matte nickel, the NEUMANN TLM 49 pairs the famous K 47 capsule, also used in the M 49 and U 47, with modern transformerless circuitry for low self-noise and high gain before feedback. Its gentle presence boost above 2 kHz, acoustically open headgrille and elastically mounted interior make the NEUMANN TLM 49 a classic-sounding, trouble-free vocal microphone for professional studios and demanding home recordings alike.
Why Choose the NEUMANN TLM 49 Large-Diaphragm Studio Microphone?
Vocal microphones are judged on one thing above all: whether a voice sounds like itself, only better. The NEUMANN TLM 49 achieves this with a large-diaphragm capsule whose response stays linear through the upper midrange before a gentle presence lift adds air, and whose cardioid pattern leans toward supercardioid, tightening rejection of room sound and spill. Because the capsule and interior are elastically mounted and the microphone ships with the EA 3 suspension, structure-borne noise stays out of the recording. The transformerless circuit keeps self-noise to 12 dB-A while handling up to 129 dB SPL, so the NEUMANN TLM 49 flatters quiet singers and loud ones in the same session, with the retro look of a 1950s classic.
Key Features
K 47 capsule from the U 47 and M 49: The legendary large-diaphragm capsule design, 34 mm in diameter, for a proven vocal sound.
Warm, vocal-optimised sound: Linear response to the upper midrange with a gentle presence boost up to 3 dB above 2 kHz.
Cardioid leaning to supercardioid: A cardioid pattern with a tendency toward supercardioid for excellent rejection of off-axis sound.
Transformerless circuitry: Modern FET electronics with tube-style sound design, low self-noise of 12 dB-A and high usable gain.
EA 3 elastic suspension included: Supplied as a set with the elastic suspension that protects against structure-borne noise.
Classic matte nickel finish: The fine matte nickel body and large, acoustically open headgrille of the 1950s Neumann classics.
Best Suited For
The NEUMANN TLM 49 suits lead and backing vocal recording above all, and also excels on speech, voice-over, acoustic guitar, upright bass and other instruments where a warm, present midrange is wanted. It fits professional production studios, broadcast and podcast rooms, and demanding home studios that want one premium vocal microphone rather than a locker full of compromises. Engineers who record both quiet and loud sources will value its wide usable dynamic range.
Setup and Connection Guide
Mount the NEUMANN TLM 49 in its EA 3 elastic suspension on a sturdy stand and address it from the front, marked by the red Neumann logo on the body. Connect it with a balanced XLR cable to a preamp or interface supplying 48 V phantom power, and set gain so loud passages peak comfortably below clipping. For close vocal work, place a PS 15 or PS 20 pop screen in front of the microphone to guard against plosives, and keep the microphone away from vibration sources where the wide, uncoloured low-frequency response would otherwise pick up rumble. The elastically mounted interior and EA 3 suspension handle the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
