Description
RODE PodMic Dynamic Podcasting Microphone
The RODE PodMic is a broadcast-quality dynamic microphone optimised for podcasting, livestreaming, voice-over and other speech applications, delivering the rich, full-bodied sound associated with professional radio studios. Its dynamic capsule and tight cardioid pattern focus on the voice in front of the microphone while rejecting room tone, keyboard noise and off-axis chatter, which makes it forgiving in rooms that are not acoustically treated. It has an internal pop filter to tame plosives, internal shock mounting to reduce vibration, and an integrated swing mount for easy positioning, all inside a robust all-metal body built for daily studio use.
Why Choose RODE PodMic?
Podcasters choose the RODE PodMic because it is tuned for speech first. Unlike a sensitive condenser, which hears everything in the room, a dynamic capsule needs the speaker close and rewards that with a warm, present voice and far less background noise, which is why broadcast studios have used dynamic microphones for decades. The internal pop filter means there is no separate filter to buy or align, and the internal shock mount keeps desk knocks and stand bumps out of the recording. Because the microphone is passive, it needs no phantom power and no battery, and it connects over a standard balanced 3-pin XLR output to any mixer, interface or podcast console. It was optimised for use with the RODECaster Pro podcast production console, where a dedicated PodMic preset applies matching processing, but it performs equally well with any high-quality XLR interface.
Key Features
- Broadcast dynamic capsule: rich, full-bodied speech sound with a warm, present voice character.
- Tight cardioid pattern: end-address pickup that rejects room noise and off-axis sound.
- Internal pop filter: built-in plosive protection with nothing extra to buy or align.
- Internal shock mounting: reduces vibration, desk knocks and handling noise.
- Integrated swing mount: easy positioning on a boom arm or stand, with robust all-metal construction.
- Passive XLR operation: no phantom power or battery required; standard 3-pin XLR output.
Best Suited For
This microphone suits podcasters recording solo or multi-host shows, livestreamers on Twitch and YouTube, voice-over artists, gamers who want a broadcast voice, and radio-style content creators working from home studios. It is ideal for speakers who can stay close to the microphone, which is how dynamic microphones sound their best. It is not the right choice for distant miking, quiet acoustic instruments or room capture, where a condenser is more sensitive, and buyers who need direct USB recording should look at the PodMic USB instead, which is a separate model with USB-C output.
Setup and Connection Guide
Mount the microphone on a boom arm such as the PSA1 or PSA1+ or on a DS1 desk stand using its integrated swing mount, and connect a balanced XLR cable to a mixer, audio interface or podcast console. No phantom power is needed, and none should be required for operation, though the microphone can be used on inputs where phantom is present on other channels. Position the microphone close, roughly a fist’s width from the mouth and slightly off-axis, speak into the end of the microphone, and set preamp gain so normal speech peaks comfortably below clipping; dynamic microphones need more gain than condensers, so use a clean, high-gain preamp where possible. Keep the microphone away from fans and use the cardioid pattern’s rear rejection against the noisiest part of the room.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the RODE PodMic need phantom power?
No. It is a passive dynamic microphone that requires no power at all. It connects over XLR to a mixer, interface or podcast console, which supplies the gain.
Is this a USB microphone?
No. This is the original XLR-only PodMic, which has no USB output. The PodMic USB is a separate model that adds USB-C connectivity, a Revolution Preamp and APHEX processing alongside its XLR output.
What boom arm or stand fits the RODE PodMic?
The integrated swing mount fits RODE’s PSA1 and PSA1+ broadcast arms and the DS1 desk stand, and it mounts to standard microphone stands through the swing mount.
