Description
RODE VideoMic ME-L Directional Microphone for iOS Devices
The RODE VideoMic ME-L is a high-quality directional microphone for iPhone and iPad devices with a Lightning connector, designed to give video a dramatic audio upgrade over a phone’s built-in microphone. Its cardioid electret condenser capsule focuses on the sound in front of the camera while reducing surrounding noise, so the subject of the video stays clear and intelligible even in busy locations. It connects digitally over Lightning at 24-bit resolution, with conversion happening inside the microphone itself, and it carries a 3.5 mm headphone jack so the operator can monitor exactly what is being recorded while filming.
Full specifications and details are published by the manufacturer on RODE VideoMic ME-L product page.
Why Choose RODE VideoMic ME-L?
Mobile creators choose the RODE VideoMic ME-L because it removes the two weaknesses of phone audio in one small device. First, directionality: a phone’s built-in microphone hears the whole room, while this microphone’s cardioid pattern points at the subject and pushes the background back, which is the difference between usable interview audio and a wash of crowd noise. Second, monitoring: because the Lightning port is occupied by the microphone, the built-in headphone jack is the only way to hear the recording as it happens, and it also plays back audio for review. The microphone is powered by the iOS device itself, so there is no battery to charge and nothing to switch on, and at 73.5 mm long it adds almost nothing to the size of a phone rig. It is compatible with Apple iOS devices with a Lightning port running iOS 11 or higher, and it ships with a mic clip and a furry windshield for outdoor use.
Key Features
- Directional cardioid capsule: focuses on the subject in front of the camera and reduces surrounding noise.
- Digital Lightning connection: 24-bit audio at 44.1 and 48 kHz sample rates, converted inside the microphone.
- 3.5 mm headphone monitoring: monitor live audio and play back recordings while the microphone is connected.
- Powered by the iOS device: no battery to charge and no power switch; plug in and record.
- Compact all-metal body: 73.5 mm long microphone with mic clip and furry windshield included.
- Made for mobile video: vlogging, interviews, events and social video on Lightning iPhones and iPads.
Best Suited For
The RODE VideoMic ME-L suits vloggers and social creators filming on a Lightning iPhone or iPad, journalists and students recording interviews and events on a phone, wedding and event filmmakers capturing clean guest audio, and anyone whose phone videos currently suffer from echoey, distant sound. It is ideal for run-and-gun mobile video where a separate recorder would slow the shoot down. It is designed for Lightning iOS devices only, so it does not fit USB-C iPhones, iPads or Android phones, and it is a single directional microphone, not a stereo or wireless system, so wide scenes with multiple speakers spread across a room will still need a different setup.
Setup and Connection Guide
Clip the microphone to the phone using the supplied mic clip, plug the Lightning connector firmly into the iPhone or iPad, and fit the furry windshield when filming outdoors or in wind. Open the camera app or any video app and record a short test clip, monitoring through earphones plugged into the microphone’s 3.5 mm jack to confirm the subject is clear and the level is healthy. Point the front of the microphone at the subject and keep the subject as close as practical, since directionality helps but cannot replace proximity. When finished, play back through the same headphone jack to check the take before moving on, and keep the Lightning connector clean and dry between shoots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which devices work with the RODE VideoMic ME-L?
It is compatible with Apple iOS devices with a Lightning port running iOS 11 or higher. It does not connect to USB-C iPhones or iPads, or to Android devices, since it uses a Lightning connector.
Can I monitor audio while recording with the RODE VideoMic ME-L?
Yes. The 3.5 mm jack on the microphone provides a headphone output for live monitoring and playback, which matters because the phone’s Lightning port is occupied by the microphone itself.
Does the RODE VideoMic ME-L need a battery?
No. It is powered by the connected iOS device, so there is no battery to charge and no power switch; it is ready as soon as it is plugged in.
