Description
Behringer MS40 Digital Stereo Monitor System
The Behringer MS40 is a powered two-way stereo monitor system for computer studios, multimedia workstations and keyboard monitoring. Two amplifiers inside the right cabinet deliver 2 x 20 W to a 4.75-inch woofer and a 2.5-inch tweeter in each speaker, giving a frequency response of 50 Hz to 25 kHz. What sets the MS40 apart from simple desktop speakers is its digital input stage: optical and coaxial S/PDIF inputs feed a 24-bit converter supporting sample rates up to 192 kHz, alongside two analogue stereo inputs. Separate volume controls, bass and treble adjustment and a front-panel headphone socket make it a self-contained desktop monitoring solution.
Key features
- 2 x 20 W built-in amplification, 40 W total
- 4.75-inch woofer and 2.5-inch tweeter per cabinet
- Frequency response 50 Hz to 25 kHz
- Optical and coaxial digital inputs with 24-bit, up to 192 kHz conversion
- Two analogue stereo inputs: TRS mini jack and RCA
- Separate volume controls for the line inputs, plus bass and treble
- Front headphone socket that automatically mutes the speakers
- Magnetically shielded, front-ported bass-reflex cabinets
Digital and analogue sources together
The MS40 accepts audio in almost every form a desktop produces. Computers, CD and media players with digital outputs connect through the TOSLINK optical or coaxial RCA inputs, where the 24-bit converter handles sample rates up to 192 kHz for clean, noise-free playback that bypasses the analogue noise of a basic sound card. Analogue sources use the stereo TRS mini jack input or the RCA pair, both presenting a 20 k ohm input impedance. The two line inputs have individual volume controls and can be used simultaneously or mixed with a digital source, so a keyboard player can monitor an instrument against a backing track, or a video editor can balance two feeds, without repatching cables or opening software settings.
Powered right speaker, linked left speaker
All amplification and connections live in the right cabinet; the left speaker connects to it with the supplied speaker cable and draws its power from there, so only one mains connection is needed for the pair. The front-ported bass-reflex design makes placement near a wall more forgiving than rear-ported cabinets, and magnetic shielding allows the speakers to sit beside computer monitors and hard-working desktop equipment without interference problems. Each cabinet measures 279 x 173 x 245 mm; the right speaker weighs 4.9 kg and the left 3.2 kg, reflecting the amplifiers housed in the powered unit. Power consumption is 90 W.
Controls on the front panel
Day-to-day control needs no menus. Separate volume knobs govern the line inputs, bass and treble controls shape the balance for the room and the desk position, and the 1/4-inch headphone socket on the front panel mutes the loudspeakers automatically when headphones are plugged in — useful for late-night editing or checking detail. Because the tone controls sit after the inputs, small corrections for a reflective desk or a corner placement can be made in seconds, and returned to neutral just as fast.
Who the MS40 suits
This system is aimed at the desk: home recording and podcast editing, electronic keyboard monitoring, multimedia and video production, and everyday music listening where built-in monitor speakers are not enough. It is a playback-only system — it does not record microphones into a computer, and a source without a suitable analogue or S/PDIF digital output needs an interface or converter in between. Within that role it offers an unusual amount of connectivity for its size, including the digital inputs most small monitors leave out.
If your workspace mixes a computer, a keyboard and a digital player, the MS40 gathers them into one clear, controllable pair of speakers. Digital conversion up to 192 kHz, twin line inputs with their own levels, tone controls and a muting headphone socket make it a practical centrepiece for a compact studio desk.
