Sony VPL-PHZ60 4K Laser Projector

Sony VPL-PHZ60 WUXGA 3LCD Laser Projector

The Sony VPL-PHZ60 is a compact installation projector for meeting rooms, classrooms, houses of worship and simulation use. Despite the way it is sometimes listed, its native resolution is WUXGA at 1920 x 1200, delivered by three BrightEra LCD panels; it accepts 4K input signals at 30p and scales them to its native panel resolution. A Z-Phosphor laser light source produces 6,000 lumens of white and colour light output, and the whole projector is under 100 mm tall and weighs roughly 7 kg, unusually small for this brightness class.

Key features

• WUXGA native resolution: 1920 x 1200 from a three-panel BrightEra 3LCD system
• 6,000 lumens output: equal white and colour light output for bright, readable images
• Z-Phosphor laser source: long-life laser illumination with minimal routine maintenance
• Wide lens shift: vertical range from minus 35 to plus 55 percent, horizontal plus/minus 15 percent
• 1.6x manual zoom lens: throw ratio from 1.23:1 to 1.97:1, screen sizes from 40 to 300 inches
• Reality Creation processing: pixel-level analysis that sharpens text and images without added noise
• 4K input support: accepts 4K signals at 30p, plus HDBaseT for long cable runs

Image quality and processing

Because the PHZ60 uses three separate LCD panels, colour light output equals white light output at 6,000 lumens, so presentations and video keep their saturation in lit rooms instead of washing out. Sony’s Reality Creation engine analyses the image pixel by pixel against a stored pattern database to recover detail, while the Bright View feature adjusts processing for well-lit environments, holding the colour balance steady as it raises visibility. The contrast system can fully extinguish the laser on black frames, which Sony rates as an infinite contrast ratio, helping dark scenes and video content in mixed-use spaces.

Installation flexibility

The lens offers a manual 1.6x zoom with a throw ratio between 1.23:1 and 1.97:1, covering screen sizes from 40 to 300 inches. Lens shift is generous for the class: the image can be moved from 35 percent below to 55 percent above the lens centre vertically, and 15 percent either way horizontally, so the projector can be mounted off to one side of the ideal position and still fill the screen squarely without digital keystone shrinking the image. Keystone correction of plus/minus 30 degrees in both axes is available when shift alone is not enough, and an intelligent settings mode stores configuration profiles for common installation situations.

Connections and control

Two HDMI inputs accept signals including 4K at 30p, and an HDBaseT connection carries video, audio and control over a single network cable for longer runs between rack and projector. Two VGA inputs, composite video, audio in and out, USB ports and a wired LAN connection cover legacy sources and networked control, with RS-232C for integration into room control systems. A built-in 16 W speaker handles speech and programme audio in small and medium rooms without external amplification, which simplifies classroom and meeting installations.

Size, weight and running

Sony positioned this model as one of the smallest and lightest WUXGA 3LCD laser projectors in its lumen class at launch: less than 100 mm in height and approximately 7 kg, so one installer can handle ceiling mounting comfortably and the unit blends into rooms where a large projector would dominate. The laser source removes lamp changes from the maintenance schedule, and the filter cycle is rated up to 20,000 hours. Accepted signals span computer resolutions to 1920 x 1200 and video formats from standard definition to 1080p.

For organisations that need 6,000 lumens of WUXGA projection without a bulky chassis or frequent servicing, the VPL-PHZ60 packages Sony’s laser and processing technology in a notably compact installation projector.
