The Bowers & Wilkins 606 S3 is the biggest standmount speaker in the 600 Series, supplied as a pair, and it is built around technology that began life in the flagship 800 Series: a Continuum cone bass and midrange driver paired with a Decoupled Double Dome tweeter. The S3 generation refines both drivers and the crossover, and the result is a speaker that sounds open, detailed and considerably more expensive than it is.

Continuum cone, explained

For decades Bowers & Wilkins made its midrange cones from woven Kevlar. Continuum, developed over eight years for the 800 Series, is a woven composite that controls the cone’s breakup – the point where it stops moving as one surface – far more progressively. The audible effect is midrange clarity: voices sit naturally in front of you, piano and guitar carry their real texture, and dense recordings separate into their layers instead of blurring together. It is the single biggest reason the 606 S3 embarrasses speakers above its price.

The tweeter is decoupled – mounted so cabinet vibration cannot reach it – and its double-dome construction stiffens the diaphragm, pushing distortion down and letting high frequencies extend cleanly to 28 kHz.

Bass with control

The 6.5-inch driver and rear Flowport give the 606 S3 genuine low-frequency reach for a bookshelf cabinet, but the character is tuneful and tight rather than heavy. Bass guitars and kick drums have pitch and shape, not just thump. Foam port plugs are included to tame the low end if the speakers must sit close to a wall, which makes placement in real living rooms far more forgiving.
