The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 is the satellite speaker at the heart of B&W’s Mini Theatre systems, and one of the most accomplished small speakers the company has made. A 4-inch woven glass-fibre bass/midrange driver and a 1-inch Nautilus tube-loaded aluminium dome tweeter sit in a curved, internally braced cabinet barely 25cm tall, yet the M-1 plays with a scale and composure that embarrass most speakers of its size. Sold singly in Matte White, it can work as a stereo pair, a five-channel surround set, or anything in between.

Why it sounds bigger than it is

The Nautilus tweeter is borrowed thinking from B&W’s flagship loudspeakers: the tube behind the dome absorbs the rear radiation that would otherwise bounce back and blur the treble, so high frequencies stay clean at volume. The glass-fibre midrange cone is stiff and light, keeping voices articulate, and the curved cabinet does double duty — its shape resists the resonances a small box can produce and smooths the diffraction that hard edges cause. The result is a satellite that images properly and holds together when a film soundtrack gets busy.

Placement and systems

The M-1’s stand is part of the design rather than an accessory: it supports the speaker on a shelf or desk, then flips to become its wall bracket, with the cable hidden through the stand’s stem either way. A ball-joint lets you angle the speaker toward the listening seat. In a Mini Theatre configuration, five M-1s with a B&W subwoofer such as the PV1D or ASW608 make a surround system that disappears visually and performs far above its footprint; as a stereo pair with a subwoofer, it serves smaller rooms and desktop systems equally well.
