Edifier P17 Passive Bookshelf Speakers With High Frequency Response, Enhance Bass Response With The 4″ Bass Driver, Solid Built Mdf Enclosure, Includes Wall-mount Bracket

Edifier P17 Passive Bookshelf Speakers – Bring Your Own Amplifier, Keep the Control

Active speakers are convenient, but they lock you into one amplifier and one feature set forever. The Edifier P17 takes the opposite approach: a passive bookshelf speaker pair that connects to the amplifier or AV receiver of your choice, so you control the electronics, the budget and the upgrade path. Each speaker pairs a 4-inch bass driver with a 19 mm silk dome tweeter in a solid MDF enclosure, and wall-mount brackets are included in the box for rooms where shelf space is spoken for.

That flexibility makes the P17 equally useful as the front pair in a first stereo system, as surrounds in a home theatre, or as compact speakers in a bedroom or study built around an existing amplifier.

Key features

• Passive 2-way bookshelf speakers (pair) – pair with any stereo amp or AV receiver
• 4-inch bass driver for fuller low-frequency presence than compact rivals
• 19 mm (0.75-inch) silk film tweeter for smooth high-frequency detail
• Frequency response from 55 Hz to 20,000 Hz
• 6-ohm impedance – compatible with the vast majority of amplifiers
• Rated power handling 5 – 20 W per speaker
• Solid MDF enclosure, approximately 6 kg per pair, minimises cabinet resonance
• Wall-mount brackets included; 5-way binding posts for speaker cable

Why passive still makes sense

With a passive speaker, the amplifier is a separate decision. Start with a modest integrated amplifier today, move to a better one later, or drive the P17s from an AV receiver you already own – the speakers stay. It also means one remote, one volume control and one set of inputs runs your whole system, rather than a separate powered speaker to switch on and manage. For home theatre builders, passive speakers are the standard for a reason: every channel matches, and the receiver handles everything centrally.

Sound and placement

The 4-inch driver moves enough air to give music real body in small to medium rooms, with usable bass down to 55 Hz – satisfying on its own for most listening, and easy to extend later with a subwoofer for films. The silk tweeter keeps the top end smooth for long sessions. Sensitivity is modest, so the P17 rewards an amplifier with honest power rather than the smallest mini-amp, but within its rated range it plays cleanly and without strain. Wall-mounting at ear level, using the included brackets, gives the best stereo image and frees the desk or shelf entirely.

Build and everyday ownership

At roughly 6 kg for the pair, the P17 feels like what it is: dense MDF, properly put together, at 128 x 238 x 168 mm per cabinet. Standard binding posts accept bare wire or banana plugs, setup is a single run of speaker cable per side, and there is nothing to charge, pair or update.

If you already own an amplifier – or want the freedom to choose one – the P17 is the straightforward, well-built way into proper passive stereo.
