Edifier R1700BTS Bookshelf Speaker (Brown)

Edifier R1700BTs Bookshelf Speaker (Brown)

The Edifier R1700BTs is a powered 2.0 bookshelf speaker system for listeners who want real stereo sound from a desk, a shelf or a TV stand without buying a separate amplifier. This is the S version of the long-running R1700 design, which adds a subwoofer output and Bluetooth 5.0 with Qualcomm aptX HD to the original formula, and this listing is the brown wood-finish version. Each cabinet combines a 4-inch mid-bass driver with a 19 mm silk dome tweeter, driven by a Class-D amplifier with digital signal processing, for a system rated at 66 watts RMS in total.

Key features

• 66W RMS total output: 15W x 2 treble plus 18W x 2 mid-bass, Class-D amplification
• 4-inch mid-bass driver and 19 mm silk dome tweeter in each speaker
• Bluetooth 5.0 with Qualcomm aptX HD for higher-quality wireless streaming
• Dual RCA line inputs for two wired sources at the same time
• Dedicated subwoofer output with automatic crossover detection for a 2.1 upgrade
• Side-panel volume, bass and treble controls, plus a wireless remote
• Wooden MDF cabinets in a brown finish, front baffles angled up by 10 degrees

How it sounds

The two-way design splits the work sensibly: the silk dome tweeter handles detail and vocal clarity, while the 4-inch driver covers the midrange and bass from a flared bass reflex port. Edifier rates the frequency response from 52 Hz to 20 kHz, which is genuine extension for a cabinet of this size, and the signal-to-noise ratio is rated at 85 dB or better, so quiet passages stay clean at desktop listening distances. Digital signal processing with dynamic range control keeps the sound composed when the volume rises, instead of letting the small drivers distort. The result is the warm, full-bodied presentation the R1700 series is known for: voices sit naturally in the mix, acoustic instruments keep their texture, and there is enough low-end weight for film dialogue and everyday music without a subwoofer.

Connections, wired and wireless

Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD is the headline connection, giving cleaner wireless audio from compatible phones, tablets and computers than standard Bluetooth codecs. For wired sources there are two RCA line inputs, so a TV and a turntable, or a computer and a games console, can stay connected permanently and be switched from the remote. There is no optical input on this model, so a TV without analogue output will need its own converter or headphone output. The subwoofer output is the upgrade path: connect a powered subwoofer and the system detects it and applies its crossover automatically, turning the pair into a 2.1 system for larger rooms.

Controls and daily life

Volume, bass and treble dials sit on the side of the active speaker, within reach from a desk chair, and the included remote handles volume, mute and input switching from across the room, including the Soundfield Spatializer mode that widens the perceived soundstage. The cabinets are MDF with a brown wood-effect finish, and the front baffle is angled upward by about 10 degrees so the sound points toward ear level when the speakers sit on a desk or low shelf. Each speaker measures about 154 x 254 x 214 mm, and the pair weighs about 6.6 kg, so allow shelf depth for the rear port and cables.

Choose the R1700BTs in brown if you want the classic bookshelf look with modern habits: phone streaming in the morning, TV sound in the evening, and the option to add a subwoofer later without replacing the speakers.
