The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 is a powered bookshelf speaker system built for listeners who want proper hi-fi sound without a rack of separate components. One speaker houses the amplification and connections; the second is a passive partner linked by standard speaker cable. Inside each cabinet, a 4-1/2 inch polypropylene woofer with a wide-roll surround works with a 3/4 inch soft dome tweeter mounted in a custom waveguide, and each channel is driven by its own built-in 50-watt amplifier. The result is a compact 2-way system that covers TV, desktop and small-room listening with a single box on each side of the screen or desk.
Connectivity is where the ConneX idea earns its name. An HDMI ARC input lets a television drive the speakers directly, with volume following the TV remote. A USB input accepts 24-bit/96kHz audio from a computer, an optical input covers disc players and streamers, and Bluetooth with aptX handles wireless playback from phones and tablets. The analogue RCA input is switchable between line level and phono, so a turntable can be connected directly using the built-in phono preamp — no separate phono stage required. A subwoofer output is provided for listeners who later want to extend the low end, and firmware can be updated over USB.
In a conventional passive system, the signal chain runs source, amplifier, then speakers, with each box adding cost, cables and shelf space. The DCB41 folds the amplifier into the speaker and matches it to the drivers at the factory, so the amplifier’s output characteristics are designed around the exact woofer and tweeter it drives. For a desktop or a living-room TV setup, that removes the AV receiver from the equation entirely while keeping the inputs most people actually use. It also makes the system easy to move: two speakers, power, and one cable to the source.
The bass reflex port fires to the rear in an S-shaped configuration, which extends low-frequency output while keeping port noise low; leaving a little space behind each cabinet helps it breathe. ELAC’s XBass enhancer is a proprietary circuit that lifts bass output when the music or soundtrack needs it, useful at lower listening levels where small speakers can sound thin. The custom waveguide around the tweeter controls dispersion, which tightens stereo imaging and keeps dialogue centred and intelligible on film and TV.
The DCB41 suits desks, study rooms, bedrooms and compact living rooms — anywhere a full component system is impractical but a soundbar feels like a compromise. It handles TV and film through HDMI ARC, nearfield computer listening through USB, vinyl through the phono input, and everyday wireless listening over Bluetooth. The full technical specifications are listed in the Additional Information table on this page, including frequency response, maximum output, dimensions and weight for each speaker.
