Bose 251 Environmental Outdoor Speakers

Bose 251 Environmental Outdoor Speakers (Pair)

The Bose 251 is Bose’s long-running environmental speaker for permanent outdoor installation — a wall-mount pair designed to withstand salt fog, sun, 100% humidity and temperature extremes from -40°C to 70°C. Each speaker combines two 2.5-inch environmental Twiddler drivers in Bose’s Articulated Array configuration with a 5.25-inch environmental woofer, housed in a dual-port moulded polypropylene composite enclosure. The angled Twiddler array spreads a wide, consistent sound field across a patio or garden instead of beaming sound in one direction.

Everything exposed to the weather is chosen for it: the drivers are polymer fibre composite, the grille is galvanised powder-coated steel, the connection terminals are nickel-plated brass, and the hardware is environmentally resistant. Bose also applies its Syncom computer quality control to each speaker. Power handling is 100W IEC continuous (rated 6 ohms), and the speakers are compatible with amplifiers or receivers rated 10–200 watts per channel into 4 to 8 ohms.

Wiring runs, per the manual

Bose specifies speaker wire by run length to keep response deviation within ±0.5 dB: 18 AWG (0.75 mm²) for runs up to 9 m, 16 AWG (1.5 mm²) up to 14 m, and 14 AWG (2.0 mm²) up to 21 m. Bose also recommends protecting exposed wire ends — particularly in salt-air environments — with silicone caulk after connection, and checking connections annually.

Where the 251 works best

The 251 is a fit-and-forget speaker: mount the pair under eaves, on exterior walls or around a pool or deck, connect them to an amplifier or a receiver’s zone-2 output, and leave them out year-round. The wide-dispersion array suits background music over a broad area rather than a single seated sweet spot.

Where it fits

Homes with patios, terraces and gardens, plus cafés, resorts and commercial outdoor areas needing durable, discreet wall-mounted stereo. Full specifications are in the Additional Information table on this page.
