Description

Bowers & Wilkins CT7.4 LCRS Custom Theatre Speaker – Two-Way LCRS Speaker for Custom Home Theatres

The CT7.4 LCRS sits in the middle of the Bowers & Wilkins CT700 custom theatre range, a family of cabinet loudspeakers designed to be built into dedicated cinema rooms rather than placed on furniture. The LCRS designation describes its flexibility: a single CT7.4 can work as a left, centre or right front speaker, or as a surround channel, so the same model can voice every main position in a theatre. It is a passive, two-way vented-box design that needs external amplification, and everything about its shallow cabinet, black painted finish and magnetically attached cloth grille is aimed at disappearing into joinery or behind an acoustically transparent screen while the sound does the opposite.

Where the larger CT7.3 above it uses a separate midrange driver in a three-way layout, the CT7.4 covers the midrange and bass together with a pair of woven Aramid Fibre bass/midrange cones. That simpler two-way arrangement keeps the cabinet narrower, at 444mm wide, and gives the speaker a high 94dB sensitivity, so it reaches convincing cinema levels from the kind of power a good AV receiver or a modest separate power amplifier can supply. Recommended amplifier power is 50W to 150W into 8 ohms.

Key features

  • Two-way vented-box design for left, centre, right or surround use
  • Nautilus tube-loaded 25mm cloth dome tweeter
  • Twin 165mm woven Aramid Fibre bass/midrange drivers
  • High 94dB sensitivity for strong output from modest amplifier power
  • Flowport venting and a magnetically attached grille
  • Shallow 265mm cabinet depth for installation in theatre joinery

Driver design

The tweeter is a 25mm cloth dome loaded by a tapered Nautilus tube, a long-standing Bowers & Wilkins technique in which the rearward energy from the dome is absorbed along a narrowing tube instead of reflecting back and colouring the sound. The two 165mm bass/midrange units use woven Aramid Fibre cones, a material the company has used for decades because it combines low mass with high stiffness and good self-damping. Sharing the work between two drivers increases cone area and power handling in the bass while keeping each cone small enough to behave well through the midrange, which is where dialogue intelligibility is decided. A single crossover at 4kHz hands over to the tweeter.

Performance in a theatre system

On the reference axis the CT7.4 measures 49Hz to 22kHz within a 3dB window, with usable output extending to 43Hz at the -6dB point, so effects weight is present in the speaker itself while a subwoofer still handles the deepest octave in a full cinema system. Dispersion is controlled to stay within 2dB of the reference response across a horizontal arc of more than 60 degrees, which helps every seat hear a similar balance rather than only the central chair. Harmonic distortion is held below 1 percent from 90Hz to 20kHz at a 90dB test level, and the nominal impedance of 8 ohms, with a 4 ohm minimum, is an undemanding load for theatre amplification.

Installation and placement

The cabinet measures 343mm high, 444mm wide and 265mm deep, growing to 288mm deep with the grille fitted, and weighs 15.75kg. Because the same cabinet serves every LCRS position, front speakers can be mounted at a consistent height behind a screen or within a baffle wall, and surrounds can be integrated into side or rear joinery. The Flowport needs reasonable clearance behind and around the vent to work as intended, so enclosed installations should preserve an acoustic opening rather than sealing the cabinet tightly into furniture. As a passive design it connects with ordinary speaker cable, with a maximum recommended cable impedance of 0.1 ohm.

Choosing the CT7.4

The CT7.4 makes sense when a theatre is being planned as a system: identical speakers across the front stage keep pans and voices tonally consistent as sounds move across the screen, and its sensitivity means the amplifier budget can stay sensible. Listeners who want a dedicated midrange driver and deeper bass extension from the front channels can step up within the same range, while smaller rooms and surround duties are exactly where this two-way model earns its place.

In short, the CT7.4 LCRS is a purpose-built theatre cabinet speaker: efficient, compact in depth, and voiced for the clarity that film soundtracks demand.
