Polk Audio RC80I 8-inch In-Ceiling Speakers (Pair)

Polk Audio RC80I 8-inch In-Ceiling Speakers (Pair)

The Polk Audio RC80i is a round two-way in-ceiling speaker supplied as a pair, and it is the largest ceiling model in Polk’s RCi architectural range. Its 8-inch Dynamic Balance woofer moves considerably more air than the 6.5-inch ceiling speakers most systems default to, which shows up as fuller bass, more headroom and better coverage in larger rooms and open-plan spaces. The 1-inch metalised soft dome tweeter sits in a ball-and-socket swivel mount, so after the speakers are fixed in the ceiling the treble can still be aimed down towards the seating rather than across the ceiling void.

A pair of RC80i speakers covers several common briefs with one product: a stereo music zone in a kitchen, living area or bedroom, a matched pair of surround speakers behind the seats, or the height channels of an Atmos system. The paintable round grille sits flush in the ceiling, leaving the room’s sightlines and floor space completely untouched.

Key features

• 8-inch Dynamic Balance woofer: Mineral-filled polymer cone with rubber surround for fuller low frequencies and higher output.
• 1-inch swivel tweeter: Metalised soft dome in a ball-and-socket mount that aims treble at the listening position.
• 35 Hz to 20 kHz total response: Wide rated frequency response with 90 dB efficiency for easy amplifier matching.
• Moisture-resistant build: Materials suited to humid indoor locations including bathrooms, kitchens and covered porches.
• Paintable grille: Round grille that can be painted to match the ceiling for a discreet finish.
• Rotating cam mounting: Cam fixings lock the speaker tightly into the ceiling cutout and resist vibration.
• Sold as a pair: Matched pair for stereo zones, surrounds or a set of Atmos height channels.

Dynamic Balance drivers

Polk’s Dynamic Balance process uses laser imaging to find and eliminate the resonances in a cone material that would otherwise colour the sound. The RC80i woofer is a mineral-filled polymer cone with a rubber surround: light enough for clean midrange, controlled enough for the bass output an 8-inch ceiling speaker is bought for, and stable in the humidity a ceiling void can produce. The tweeter’s metalised soft dome extends the smooth treble the design aims for, and because the whole dome assembly swivels, the installer can compensate when joists or light fittings force a speaker away from its ideal position.

Sound and system use

The RC80i is rated for 20 to 100 watts per channel of amplification and presents an 8-ohm load, with the -3 dB limits of its response at 50 Hz and 20 kHz. In a music zone the pair gives a room genuine stereo width from the ceiling; in a theatre it matches the other RCi models, so RC85i or RC65i wall speakers at ear level and RC80i speakers overhead share one voicing across the system. For Atmos work, position the pair above and slightly in front of the main seat, in line with the front speakers, following Dolby’s placement guidance.

Installation notes

Each speaker needs a circular cutout of 23.81 cm diameter. The overall diameter is 27.3 cm, the mounting depth is 7.94 cm and the overall depth is 9.21 cm, so shallow ceiling voids are workable provided pipes and cables are avoided. Spring-loaded clips take the speaker wire, the rotating cams pull the frame tight against the ceiling, and the pair’s shipping weight is 4.31 kg. Space stereo pairs evenly across the room for the most uniform coverage, and keep speakers clear of vents and light fittings when laying out the grid.

Applications

Larger living rooms, open-plan kitchen and dining spaces, and home theatres needing surround or height channels with real output are where the RC80i earns its place over smaller ceiling speakers. The moisture-resistant construction extends the list to bathrooms, spa and pool rooms and covered outdoor ceilings used within Polk’s guidance for the series.

For rooms where a 6.5-inch ceiling speaker would be working at its limit, the RC80i pair offers the bigger-driver alternative: more bass, more output and the same invisible RCi finish.
