JBL Clip 4 Portable Speaker – Black

JBL Clip 4 Portable Speaker – Black

The JBL Clip 4 is the fourth generation of JBL’s clip-on speaker: an ultra-portable Bluetooth speaker with its carabiner built into the body, made to hook onto a backpack, belt loop or bicycle frame and play while you move. At 239 g it is the lightest of the recent Clip generations, and the oval, fabric-wrapped body is sized to sit comfortably in one hand. This listing is the Black finish — the low-key option that looks right on a work bag as much as on a trekking pack.

Inside, a single 40 mm transducer driven at 5 W RMS produces JBL Original Pro Sound: a fuller, punchier presentation than the size suggests, with a frequency response of 100 Hz to 20 kHz. It is a personal speaker for near-field listening — one listener or a small group around a tent, a desk or a kitchen counter — and within that brief it plays with more body than any phone speaker can manage.

Key features

• 5 W RMS output from a 40 mm transducer
• Up to 10 hours of playtime from a single charge
• IP67 waterproof and dustproof sealed body
• Bluetooth 5.1 wireless streaming
• Upgraded integrated carabiner, built into the speaker body
• USB-C charging, fully charged in about 3 hours

Battery and charging

The lithium-ion polymer battery (3.885 Wh) gives up to 10 hours of music per charge, varying with volume and content — enough for a working day, a long ride or a weekend day-trip without thinking about a socket. Recharging is via USB-C, the same cable standard as most current phones, and takes about 3 hours from empty. Playback and volume controls are on the speaker’s front face, raised so they can be found by touch while the speaker hangs from a strap.

Made to live outdoors

IP67 sealing means the Clip 4 is dust-tight and can be submerged in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes. Clipped outside a bag it takes rain, trail dust, poolside splashes and beach sand in stride, and it can be rinsed clean under a tap. The fully wrapped fabric body and the metal carabiner — redesigned for this generation, integrated into the speaker for extra protection — are built for exactly this kind of daily knocking about.

Clip 4 or Clip 5?

The Clip 4 remains the lighter, simpler member of the pair: 239 g against the newer model’s 285 g, Bluetooth 5.1, and no app-based extras to manage. Buyers who want the longest playtime and Auracast multi-speaker playback should look at the Clip 5; buyers who want the lightest clip-on JBL for everyday carry will find the Clip 4 does the whole job — clip, play, recharge — with nothing spare.

For trekkers, cyclists, commuters and anyone whose hands are already full, the Clip 4 in Black solves the oldest problem in portable audio: where the speaker goes when you are on the move. It goes on the outside of the bag, and it plays from there all day.
