Description
Marshall Acton III Bluetooth Speaker (Midnight Blue)
The Marshall Acton III is the compact member of Marshall’s home speaker line, built for a single room rather than a hall, and finished here in Midnight Blue. It takes the visual language of a Marshall guitar amplifier — textured cabinet covering, woven grille cloth, brass-coloured controls and the script logo across the front — and scales it down to a box that sits comfortably on a shelf, sideboard, desk or kitchen counter. Underneath that styling is a proper stereo loudspeaker: a separate woofer and two tweeters, each with its own amplifier, in a bass-reflex cabinet tuned for close-to-wall placement in real rooms.
Midnight Blue changes the character of the object without changing the engineering. The deep blue finish reads less like stage equipment and more like a piece of furniture, which matters for a speaker that stays on display permanently and is powered from the mains. Everything else follows the standard Acton III specification: Bluetooth 5.2 streaming, a wired 3.5 mm input, analogue bass and treble controls on the top panel, and sound processing that compensates for placement and listening level.
Key features
- 60 W of Class D power: One 30 W amplifier drives the woofer and two 15 W amplifiers drive the tweeters, giving the Acton III headroom well beyond its size.
- Reworked stereo image: The two tweeters are angled outward and fitted with updated waveguides, widening the soundstage so stereo separation survives in a single compact cabinet.
- Bluetooth 5.2: Next-generation Bluetooth with a 10 m working range, prepared for Bluetooth LE Audio and updated over the air through the Marshall Bluetooth app.
- Analogue tone controls: Dedicated bass and treble knobs on the top panel let you tune the speaker to the room and the recording without opening an app.
- Dynamic Loudness: The tonal balance is adjusted automatically as volume changes, so low-level listening keeps its bass weight and top-end clarity.
- Placement compensation: A setting in the Marshall Bluetooth app adapts the output for nearby walls and reflective surfaces.
- More considered materials: A PVC-free build using 70 percent recycled plastic and vegan materials only.
Design and controls
The top panel is the interface, and it is deliberately mechanical. A brass-coloured volume knob, separate bass and treble knobs, a source button, a play and pause button, a skip control and a flick power switch cover everything the speaker does day to day. There is no need to reach for a phone to pause a track or tame an overbearing bass line, and the controls remain legible and usable in low light. The cabinet itself is a bass-reflex design, so placement a short distance from a wall reinforces the low end in a predictable way that the bass control can then trim.
Sound performance
Marshall specifies a frequency range of 45 Hz to 20,000 Hz and a maximum sound pressure level of 95 dB at one metre, figures that explain why the Acton III fills a bedroom, study or living room without strain. The 4-inch woofer handles the low and midrange weight that gives guitars, kick drums and male voices their body, while the angled tweeters carry the detail and stereo width. Because each driver section has its own Class D amplifier, the speaker stays composed when the volume rises rather than compressing everything through a single shared amp. It is a mono-box compromise only in footprint; the presentation is genuine stereo.
Connectivity and everyday use
Wireless listening runs over Bluetooth 5.2 from a phone, tablet or computer, and the Marshall Bluetooth app adds equalisation, placement compensation and over-the-air firmware updates. The 3.5 mm input covers wired sources such as a turntable with a built-in phono stage, a CD player, a television headphone output or a laptop. There is no Wi-Fi and no voice assistant, which keeps the speaker focused on one job: playing music from the device in your hand or the source plugged into it. Power is from the mains lead, with a 100 to 240 V, 50 to 60 Hz supply, so there is no battery to manage and no charging routine to remember.
Where it fits
The Acton III suits listeners who want one good speaker in one room: a desk setup that needs to handle both work calls and evening listening, a bedroom system, a kitchen counter speaker that can compete with an extractor fan, or a shelf in a living room where a full hi-fi separates system would dominate. Its 260 by 170 by 150 mm footprint and 2.85 kg weight make it easy to reposition when a room is rearranged.
In Midnight Blue, the Acton III keeps everything that defines the model — the amplifier-inspired design, the tactile controls, the wide stereo image from a small box and the honest, full-range Marshall tuning — and wraps it in a finish that sits more quietly in a considered interior while still being unmistakably a Marshall.
