Edifier MP230 Wireless Speaker Brown

Edifier MP230 Portable Bluetooth Speaker (Brown)

The Edifier MP230 is a portable Bluetooth speaker styled after the tabletop radios of the 1950s and 1960s, built into a compact wooden enclosure with a fabric mesh grille and a row of piano-style keys along the front. This version comes in a brown finish. Behind the retro styling sits a modern stereo speaker: two 48 mm full-range drivers with double passive radiators, a Class D amplifier delivering 20 W RMS in total, Bluetooth 5.0 wireless streaming and a rechargeable battery, so it works as a desk speaker, a bedside radio alternative or a small speaker you can carry from room to room.

Retro design, wooden cabinet

Most small Bluetooth speakers are plain plastic tubes or boxes. The MP230 takes the opposite approach: a wooden cabinet, a boutique mesh grille and metal-tone piano keys that you press down to control power, Bluetooth pairing, playback and volume. The keys are a deliberate reference to vintage radio and piano styling, and they make the speaker simple to operate without looking at a screen or opening an app. At 850 g it is light enough to move between a study desk, a kitchen counter and a balcony, while the wooden enclosure gives it the solid, furniture-like presence that plastic speakers of this size rarely have.

Sound from dual drivers and passive radiators

Inside the cabinet, two 48 mm full-range drivers handle the stereo signal and are supported by double passive radiators, which use the air inside the enclosure to reinforce low-frequency output without needing a separate powered woofer. The Class D amplifier provides 10 W per channel, 20 W RMS in total, which is a substantial figure for a speaker of these dimensions and enough to fill a bedroom, study or small living area at comfortable levels. The rated frequency response runs from 70 Hz to 13 kHz with a signal-to-noise ratio of 80 dB(A) or higher, giving a presentation that suits music, podcasts, radio streams and video soundtracks.

Four ways to play

Bluetooth 5.0 covers everyday wireless listening from a phone or laptop. The USB-C connection works as a USB soundcard, so the MP230 can take digital audio directly from a computer while it charges. A 3.5 mm AUX input handles wired sources such as older players and handheld devices, and the micro SD (TF card) slot plays music stored on a card with no phone or network involved at all. Switching between sources is handled from the piano keys on the front panel, which keeps the MP230 practical as a shared household or office speaker used with several different devices across a day.

Battery and everyday use

The built-in 2500 mAh lithium battery provides up to 9 hours of playback, enough for a full working day at a desk or an evening of background music without staying plugged in. When the battery runs low, the speaker recharges over USB-C, the same connection used for its soundcard mode. The brown finish shows the wood-grain character of the cabinet most clearly, matching the mid-century radio look the design is based on. For listeners who want a small speaker with genuine stereo drivers, several wired and wireless playback options and a design that looks like a piece of furniture rather than a gadget, the MP230 is a distinctive and practical choice.
