Sonos Play Portable Bluetooth Speaker – Black

Sonos Play Portable Bluetooth Speaker – Black – Portable Stereo Speaker for Home and Travel

Sonos Play is the portable speaker Sonos designed to live two lives. At home it joins your Sonos system over WiFi, groups with speakers in other rooms and sits on its charging base, ready to go. Away from home it works as a Bluetooth speaker with up to 24 hours of battery life, an IP67 waterproof build and a removable utility loop for carrying.

Inside the compact enclosure, two angled tweeters and a mid-woofer deliver genuine stereo sound from a single speaker, driven by three Class-H digital amplifiers and supported by two passive radiators for deeper bass. Automatic Trueplay tuning adjusts the sound to wherever the speaker is placed, indoors or out. This listing is the black finish.

Sound that fills the room, then leaves with you

Play is voiced as a home speaker first: the angled tweeters create stereo separation, the mid-woofer handles vocals and bass fundamentals, and the passive radiators extend the low end beyond what the enclosure size suggests. Automatic Trueplay optimises output for each space, and bass, treble and loudness can be trimmed in the Sonos app.

Built for water, drops and daily carrying

An IP67 rating means Play can be submerged in one metre of water for up to 30 minutes, and the enclosure is drop resistant for the knocks of travel. At 192 x 113 x 77 mm and 1.3 kg it is sized for a backpack or tote rather than a pocket, and the removable utility loop makes it easy to grab or hang. The battery is replaceable, so a worn battery years from now does not end the speaker’s working life.

Part of the system, at home and away

On WiFi, Play groups with the rest of a Sonos system, pairs with a second Play for wider stereo, and streams over Apple AirPlay 2. Away from WiFi, Bluetooth grouping is the headline: connect your phone to one Play, then press and hold play on up to three more Play or Move 2 speakers to sync them without any network. The USB-C port charges your phone from the speaker’s battery and works as a line-in with an adapter.

Controls and voice

Physical buttons on top handle play, pause, track skipping and volume without reaching for your phone, and a microphone switch disconnects the far-field microphone array when you want privacy. With the microphone on, Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa handle hands-free requests, and the same array feeds Trueplay tuning. Back home, its charging base keeps it topped up and ready.

For listeners who want one speaker that behaves like part of the house system during the week and a proper travel speaker at the weekend, Sonos Play in black is the most versatile speaker Sonos makes.
