Sonos Roam 2 Portable Speaker – Sunset Red

Sonos Roam 2 Portable Speaker – Sunset Red

The Sonos Roam 2 in Sunset Red is the smallest speaker Sonos makes, and the only one designed to work equally well in both worlds: at home it joins your Sonos system over Wi-Fi like any other Sonos speaker, and away from home it becomes a rugged Bluetooth speaker that plays straight out of the box, with no Wi-Fi setup needed first. This listing is the Sunset Red finish. Inside the compact triangular body, two Class-H digital amplifiers drive one tweeter and one midwoofer, and automatic Trueplay tuning continuously adapts the sound to wherever the speaker is placed.

Sound from a speaker this size

Roam 2 keeps the acoustic design of the original Roam: a single tweeter for clear high frequencies and an elliptical midwoofer tuned to maximise low-end output from a very small cabinet, each with its own Class-H amplifier. The result is a balanced, room-filling sound for its size, with vocals that stay intelligible outdoors where small speakers usually turn thin. Automatic Trueplay uses the built-in microphone array to measure the surroundings and correct the tuning — on a kitchen counter, in a bathroom or on a picnic table — and it works on Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi, which the first-generation model could not do. Bass, treble and loudness can be trimmed in the Sonos app.

Home speaker and travel speaker in one

On your home network, Roam 2 groups with other Sonos speakers, streams from the services in the Sonos app, takes AirPlay 2 from Apple devices, and answers to Sonos Voice Control or Amazon Alexa through its far-field beamforming microphones. Sound Swap moves the music to or from the nearest Sonos speaker by holding the play button, and two Roam 2 speakers can form a stereo pair on Wi-Fi. Step outside and the dedicated Bluetooth button — a small but real improvement over the original Roam — pairs it with a phone in seconds. Bluetooth audio received by Roam 2 can also be shared with the rest of your Sonos system when you return home.

Built for bathrooms, bags and beaches

The IP67 rating means the sealed body is dustproof and can be submerged in a metre of water for up to 30 minutes, with a drop-resistant build and a matte Sunset Red finish that hides scuffs. It stands upright or lies horizontally, sensing its orientation. The 18Wh battery is rated for up to 10 hours of playback at moderate volumes, recharges over USB-C with the included cable, and also works with Qi-certified chargers and the Sonos wireless charger. At 168 x 62 x 60 mm and 0.43 kg it takes up less bag space than a water bottle.

If you want one speaker that covers the shower, the desk, the garden and the weekend trip — and slots into a Sonos system when you are home — Roam 2 in Sunset Red is exactly that product.
