Description

Sony HT-S20R 5.1ch Dolby Digital Soundbar

The Sony HT-S20R is a complete 5.1-channel home theatre system built around a three-channel soundbar, a separate wired subwoofer and two compact wired rear speakers. Unlike a single bar that simulates surround sound electronically, this system places real speakers behind the listening position, so surround effects, ambience and rear-channel detail come from the direction the mix intends. Sony rates the system at 400 W total power output, driven by an S-Master digital amplifier housed in the subwoofer unit, and Dolby Digital decoding handles the multichannel soundtracks carried by broadcasts, streaming services and discs. It is a straightforward, wired and dependable route to genuine surround sound for a living room TV.

Key features

  • Real 5.1-channel layout with a three-channel bar, wired subwoofer and two wired rear speakers
  • 400 W total power output from an S-Master digital amplifier
  • Dolby Digital decoding for multichannel film and broadcast sound
  • Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless music streaming from a phone or tablet
  • HDMI ARC, optical and analogue inputs, plus USB playback from a memory stick
  • Auto Sound, Standard, Cinema and Music modes, with separate Night and Voice modes

Real surround, not a simulation

The bar handles the front left, centre and front right channels, which keeps dialogue anchored to the screen and gives film scores and sports coverage a stable front image. The two rear speakers, each a compact full-range cabinet measuring about 86 x 171 x 86 mm, carry the surround channels, so rain, crowd noise and passing effects are heard behind you rather than folded into the front. The subwoofer uses a 160 mm cone driver in a bass-reflex cabinet and covers the low-frequency effects channel, adding weight to impacts and music without asking the small bar drivers to reproduce deep bass on their own. Because every channel has its own speaker, channel separation does not depend on room reflections the way virtual surround systems do.

Sound modes for films, music and late-night viewing

Four sound modes cover the main uses: Cinema for films, Music for stereo listening, Standard as Sony’s general-purpose setting and Auto Sound, which adjusts to the incoming content. Voice mode lifts dialogue clarity, which helps with news, dramas and commentary at modest volumes, while Night mode compresses dynamics so that loud effects are reined in and quiet passages remain audible late in the evening. Subwoofer level can be adjusted separately from the remote, letting you balance bass against room size and how close the subwoofer sits to a wall or corner.

Connections and everyday use

HDMI ARC is the simplest TV connection: one cable carries audio from the TV and lets the TV remote control the system volume through HDMI CEC, with BRAVIA Sync support on compatible Sony TVs. An optical input covers TVs without ARC, and an analogue stereo mini input connects older sources. The amplifier and controls live in the subwoofer, which also carries the display and the speaker terminals; the bar and rear speakers connect to it with colour-coded wired leads, so setup is a matter of matching colours rather than configuring menus. Bluetooth pairing adds cable-free music playback, and the USB Type-A port plays WAV, MP3 and WMA files from a memory stick.

Placement and setup

The bar is 760 mm wide and only 52 mm high, so it sits in front of most TVs without blocking the screen or the remote sensor, and it can also be wall-mounted. Place the subwoofer near the front of the room, then position the rear speakers to the sides of or just behind the main seats at about ear height. Run the system through its sound modes with familiar content once everything is connected, and adjust the subwoofer level last, in small steps, until bass sounds integrated rather than separate.

For viewers moving up from TV speakers who want the real thing — discrete rear speakers, a dedicated subwoofer and Dolby Digital decoding in one matched package — the HT-S20R remains a complete and uncomplicated system.
