The ELAC SUB1225 is a powered bass-reflex subwoofer that adds the lowest octave to a home theatre or music system. A 12-inch polypropylene cone is driven by a Class D amplifier rated at 150 watts RMS and 350 watts peak, giving a frequency response from 33 Hz to 150 Hz. Bookshelf speakers and compact towers cannot move enough air to reproduce that region convincingly, so the SUB1225 takes over below the crossover point, adding weight and scale to film soundtracks and bass-heavy music while the main speakers concentrate on the midrange and treble they handle best.

Amplifier and driver design

Class D amplification suits subwoofer duty well: it delivers high current efficiently and runs cool inside a sealed equipment space, and here it is matched by ELAC to the 12-inch driver. The polypropylene cone is light and stiff for its size, with long-throw capability so it can displace the air that 33 Hz reproduction demands. The bass-reflex cabinet tuning supports output at the bottom of the range, which is where film LFE effects and electronic music place much of their energy. A grille and AC power cord are included, and the black ash finish blends with most AV furniture.

Performance in a real system

In a surround setup, the SUB1225 reproduces the dedicated LFE channel and the bass redirected from small satellite speakers, so effects have physical presence and dialogue stays clear because the centre speaker is not straining at low frequencies. For stereo listening, a carefully set crossover lets the subwoofer extend a pair of bookshelf speakers into a genuinely full-range system. The continuously adjustable crossover from 50 Hz to 150 Hz covers both use cases, from large towers that only need help at the very bottom to compact satellites that hand over much higher.

Connections and setup

Use the RCA line-level input with an AV receiver or an amplifier with a subwoofer output, or the speaker-level inputs with a stereo amplifier that has neither. When the receiver manages bass itself, set the subwoofer crossover high or follow the receiver manual so the two filters do not overlap. Begin with the level low, play familiar material and raise it until the bass underpins the sound without drawing attention to the cabinet’s location. Trying both phase positions, where fitted via your receiver settings, and moving the subwoofer a short distance can even out room-related peaks and dips.

Placement and ownership

The cabinet measures 375 mm high, 360 mm wide and 420 mm deep and weighs 14 kg, so it fits beside a media unit or in a front corner of most rooms. Corner placement maximises output but can exaggerate boom; a position along the front wall is often the better balance.
