The JBL Stage 280F is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker of JBL’s Stage 2 series, a 2.5-way design with dual 8-inch woofers and a 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter loaded on JBL’s next-generation High-Definition Imaging (HDI) waveguide. It is built for home cinema and music systems that want JBL’s theatre dynamics in a domestic cabinet, and it includes dedicated connection provision for the Stage 240H Dolby Atmos height modules that sit on top. Frequency response extends from 33 Hz to 25 kHz.

HDI waveguide treble

JBL’s HDI waveguide, developed from its professional cinema and studio monitors, controls the tweeter’s dispersion so the direct and reflected sound share the same tonal balance. The practical result is a wide, stable soundstage that does not collapse when listeners sit off-centre — the everyday reality of a family sofa — and centre imaging that stays put for film dialogue. The 1-inch anodised aluminium dome is chosen for its combination of extension and power handling.

Dual-woofer bass section

Two 8-inch polycellulose woofers with ribbed cones share the low frequencies in a 2.5-way arrangement: the lower woofer rolls off earlier (crossover at 1.1 kHz), leaving the upper woofer to cover the midrange up to the 2.1 kHz tweeter crossover. Dual flared racetrack ports at the rear reduce air noise at high output. With 33 Hz extension at -6 dB, the 280F covers film LFE content respectably on its own, and a subwoofer can be added for the deepest octave.

Power and system building

Sensitivity of 91 dB means the 280F reaches cinema levels with modest amplification; the recommended range is 20 to 225 watts into its 6-ohm load. A second set of binding posts is provided specifically for the Stage 240H Atmos module that docks on top of the cabinet, so an Atmos upgrade does not mean replacing the front speakers.

Cabinet

Each speaker measures 1113 x 357 x 420 mm including its plinth base and weighs 25.1 kg. The Stage 2 series includes matching bookshelf, centre and subwoofer models for a complete system in one voicing.

Stage 2 series context

Stage 2 is JBL’s value home-cinema line, and the 280F borrows two technologies from further up the catalogue: the HDI waveguide from JBL’s Synthesis and studio ranges, and the polycellulose woofer treatment used across the series for consistency between models. That shared voicing is what allows a Stage 2 system to be built in stages — 280F fronts first, the matching centre and bookshelf surrounds later — without the tonal mismatch that mixing ranges usually produces.
