Clarity Cone and SMC: Dali’s distortion hunt

Two technologies define the Sonik sound. Clarity Cone drivers use a paper and wood-fibre composite inspired by Dali’s flagship Kore line – light and stiff, with fibre structure that breaks up resonances instead of ringing. Behind them, the SMC Essential magnet system places Soft Magnetic Compound in the pole piece to cut hysteresis and eddy-current distortion. The audible result is a midrange that stays clean and unforced at volume: voices sound like voices, not like speakers working hard.

Real bass from a slim cabinet

Twin woofers share the low-end load through a rear Dual Flare reflex port tuned to 43 Hz, giving the Sonik 5 a 39 Hz lower limit that most standmount speakers cannot approach. That extension matters for music – kick drums, bass guitars and orchestral weight arrive complete – and it means a stereo pair can anchor a living-room system without a subwoofer, while still leaving the door open to one for film work.

Placement and partnering

Dali designs for wide dispersion, so the Sonik 5 does not demand a single sweet spot or aggressive toe-in; 15 to 100 cm from the rear wall is the recommended window. With 88 dB sensitivity and a 6-ohm nominal impedance, amplifiers from 30 to 150 watts drive it comfortably – a good integrated amplifier is all the front end it asks for. The four finishes and magnetic grilles let it sit quietly in Scandinavian, classic or modern rooms alike.
