Bang & Olufsen Palatial LCR66 In-Wall Speaker

Bang & Olufsen Palatial LCR66 In-Wall Speaker

The Bang & Olufsen Palatial LCR66 is a passive in-wall loudspeaker for the left, centre or right channel of an installed music or home theatre system. It comes from the Palatial architectural range that Bang & Olufsen co-engineered with Origin Acoustics, and it is built around two 6.5-inch glass cone woofers and a 1-inch silk DPSD dome tweeter in a 2-way design. Bang & Olufsen publishes a frequency response of 55 Hz to 20 kHz, sensitivity of 90 dB and a recommended amplifier power range of 25 to 150 watts, figures that make the LCR66 a full front-channel speaker rather than a background-music fitting.

Key features

• Dual 6.5-inch (165 mm) glass cone woofers
• 1-inch (25 mm) silk DPSD dome tweeter
• Frequency response of 55 Hz to 20 kHz
• Sensitivity of 90 dB, minimum impedance of 6 ohms
• Recommended amplifier power of 25 to 150 watts
• On-baffle treble and bass EQ adjustments
• X-Wave woofer surround with progressive suspension
• SpringLock 2.0 tool-less mounting and a magnetic grille

Built for the front channels

An LCR speaker has to carry dialogue, music and effects with the same authority, often from behind a screen or flush in a feature wall. The LCR66 uses the same model in all three front positions, mounted vertically or horizontally as the layout requires, so the tonal character stays identical as sound moves across the front of the room. Two woofers share the bass and lower midrange work, which keeps output clean at cinema levels, while the silk DPSD tweeter handles the high frequencies. DPSD, Dual Plane Stabilized Diaphragm, supports the dome at two points to keep it stable and reduce distortion as levels rise.

Driver engineering from the Origin Acoustics partnership

The Palatial range applies Origin Acoustics driver technology inside Bang & Olufsen’s architectural format. The glass woofers use an X-Wave surround with progressive suspension, which controls cone movement at high excursion so bass stays composed instead of hardening, and compression moulded baskets keep the driver structure rigid. A tonearm mount holds the tweeter assembly stable in the baffle. On-baffle EQ adjustments for treble and bass let the installer compensate for placement, such as a position close to a side wall or behind a grille cloth, after the speaker is fitted.

Planning the installation

The LCR66 needs a cutout of 168 x 364 mm and a mounting depth of 95 mm, and the fitted grille measures 200 x 395 mm. Those three figures should be checked against the wall construction before any opening is made, along with the cable route and anything hidden inside the cavity. The SpringLock 2.0 system mounts the speaker without tools once the opening is prepared. As a passive design it needs external amplification, wired with consistent polarity, and each channel should be tested at low level before the system is run at full output.

Where the LCR66 fits

Three LCR66 speakers across the front form the core of a discreet installed theatre, partnered with in-ceiling or in-wall surrounds and a subwoofer for the lowest bass. A single unit also serves as a centre channel below or above a television where a conventional centre speaker will not fit the room design.
