Definitive Technology DI 6.5LCR In-Wall Speaker

The Definitive Technology DI 6.5LCR is an in-wall loudspeaker from the Disappearing Series, designed for the three positions that decide whether a home theatre convinces: left, centre and right. It is sold individually, and the LCR layout is deliberate. Two 6.5-inch woofers flank a central tweeter in a long, low cabinet that can be mounted horizontally under or over a screen as a centre channel, or vertically at the sides as a left or right speaker, with identical voicing in every position so pans and dialogue move across the front stage without changing character.

The Disappearing concept is that the speaker should vanish once installed. A hidden flange design and a low-profile micro-perforated grille held by GaussGrip magnetic fasteners leave a surface that sits almost flush with the wall and can be painted with it, while behind the grille sits hardware drawn from Definitive’s freestanding speaker programme rather than cut-down architectural parts.

Key features

• Dual 6.5-inch BDSS woofers: Two Balanced Double Surround System drivers for midrange clarity and bass output beyond a single-driver in-wall.
• 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter: Pure aluminium dome in a low-diffraction swivel mount that can be aimed at the listening area.
• 26 Hz to 30 kHz response: Wide rated frequency response with 90 dB sensitivity for dynamic front-stage performance.
• Environmental EQ switch: Three-position adjustment that tailors treble output for reflective or absorbent rooms.
• Hidden flange, micro-perf grille: Paintable grille on magnetic GaussGrip fasteners for a near-invisible installed finish.
• PolyStone basket: Cast PolyStone integrated basket and infinite baffle design for rigidity with minimal resonance.
• Horizontal or vertical use: One model covers left, centre and right duties for a perfectly matched front stage.

BDSS drivers and tweeter

Definitive’s Balanced Double Surround System supports the woofer cone at two points instead of one. Supporting the cone at its centre as well as its edge suppresses unwanted resonance and lets the cone travel further in a controlled way, which is how a driver working into a wall cavity produces the midrange clarity and bass output the DI 6.5LCR is known for. The woofers are mineral-filled polypropylene composite units, and a soft AeroRing around the basket damps basket resonance and helps disperse sound evenly into the room. The tweeter is a 1-inch pure aluminium dome in a specially shaped, low-diffraction housing; it pivots, so dialogue can be angled down or up towards the seats when the centre speaker has to sit above or below the screen.

Crossover and room adjustment

The crossover uses tight-tolerance, audiophile-grade components including an air-core inductor, chosen because it keeps midrange response clear and dynamic at high levels where cheaper cores saturate. The Environmental EQ switch is a small feature with a real job: rooms full of glass, tile and bare plaster add treble energy, while curtained, carpeted rooms absorb it. Setting the switch to its boost position restores sparkle in a dead room, the cut position calms a lively one, and the centre position suits average rooms.

Installation notes

The grille measures 43.5 x 21.0 cm and the wall cutout is 41.0 x 18.6 cm, with a mounting depth of 3 1/8 inches and a total depth of 3 5/8 inches. A rotating clamp system secures the speaker from the front, spring-loaded inputs accept speaker cable up to 10 gauge, and each unit weighs 3.9 kg. Recommended amplifier power is 10 to 275 watts per channel into a 4 to 8 ohm load, which spans everything from a modest AV receiver to a separate power amplifier in a dedicated room.

Applications

Three DI 6.5LCR speakers behind an acoustically transparent projection screen are the reference layout, with the model equally at home flanking a large television in a living-room cinema. Definitive voices the DI range to mix and match, so DI in-ceiling models can take surround and height duties behind an all-DI front stage.

For theatres that must look like ordinary rooms, the DI 6.5LCR delivers a matched, full-range front stage from inside the wall, with the output and dialogue clarity the front channels demand.
