Elliptical versus conical, in practice

A conical tip is a rounded point that rides relatively high in the groove. An elliptical tip is shaped to sit lower and presents a narrower contact edge across the groove while keeping a broader contact area along it, so it follows the fine, high-frequency undulations cut into the groove walls more closely. Audio-Technica positions the ATN3600LE on exactly that basis: higher frequency response, more retrieved detail and less sensitivity to surface scratches than the conical styli in the same family. On a familiar record the difference shows up as cleaner cymbals, clearer sibilants and better separation of instruments that a worn or basic conical tip smears together.

When to choose the LE

There are two good reasons to fit this stylus. The first is maintenance: every stylus wears, Audio-Technica rates the life of this one at approximately 300 hours, and a worn tip both sounds dull and can damage records, so a deck that has played for years on its original stylus is due a replacement regardless. The second is the upgrade itself: if your turntable came with the conical ATN3600L, the LE is the manufacturer’s own step up for that exact cartridge, with no change of cartridge, alignment or counterweight arrangement needed beyond checking the setup after fitting.

Fitting and setup

Stop the turntable, secure the tonearm and keep fingers and sleeves away from the cantilever. The stylus assembly pulls off its mounting and the replacement pushes on in its place; hold the plastic housing, never the cantilever or tip, and seat the new assembly fully so it sits square. Audio-Technica specifies a tracking force range of 3.0 to 4.0 grams for this cartridge family, with 3.5 grams standard; turntables such as the AT-LP60X are preset at the factory, while decks with an adjustable counterweight should be checked after the swap. Play a clean, familiar record first at modest volume and listen for distortion or mistracking before working through the collection.

Compatibility, stated precisely

This stylus is for the AT3600L cartridge system only. It does not fit Audio-Technica’s VM95, VM or other cartridge families, which use their own stylus mountings, and the LE suffix matters: ATN3600L and ATN3600LC are the conical versions, ATN3600LE is this elliptical one. Match the full model code on the packaging to the stylus your cartridge carries.
