Projector Screen buying guide

The screen is half of a projector setup. A good projector screen gives a brighter, sharper, more colourful and more uniform picture than a painted wall, and can make a mid-range projector look like a high-end one. Pro Audio Video stocks fixed-frame, motorised, manual pull-down, tripod and ALR (ambient light rejecting) screens in sizes from about 80 to 150 inches.

Types of projector screens

  • Fixed-frame screens: a tensioned, perfectly flat surface on a frame. Best for dedicated home theatres.
  • Motorised screens: roll down from the ceiling or wall at the touch of a button and disappear when not in use. Ideal for living rooms and boardrooms.
  • Manual pull-down screens: an affordable option for offices and classrooms.
  • Tripod and portable screens: for events, travel and temporary setups.
  • Floor-rising screens: rise from a cabinet, often paired with UST projectors.
  • ALR screens: reject ambient light from windows and ceiling lamps for brighter, higher-contrast images in lit rooms.

Screen size and aspect ratio

  • 16:9: standard for TV, streaming and most content.
  • 2.35:1 / 2.40:1 (CinemaScope): for film lovers who want widescreen movies without black bars, often with a lens or zoom setup.

Choose a screen width so the seating distance is about 1 to 1.5 times the screen width for 4K, or 1.5 to 2 times for 1080p.

Screen gain and material

  • Gain 1.0 (matte white): even brightness from all angles, ideal for dark rooms.
  • Higher gain (1.2 to 1.5): brighter for rooms with some light, with slightly narrower viewing angles.
  • Grey screens: improve black levels in rooms with ambient light.
  • Acoustically transparent screens: let you place speakers behind the screen, like in a cinema.

Choosing the right screen

Match the screen to your projector and room. Standard projectors in dark rooms suit matte white fixed-frame or motorised screens. Living rooms with lights benefit from ALR screens. UST projectors need UST-specific ALR screens.

Installation tips

Mount the screen at a comfortable viewing height, with the bottom edge roughly at seated knee to waist height. For motorised screens, plan power and control wiring in advance. Ensure fixed-frame screens are level and the fabric is fully tensioned.

Screen care

Clean screens only as directed by the manufacturer. Most surfaces need just a soft, dry cloth; avoid chemicals that can damage the coating.

FAQs about Projector Screen

Do I need a projector screen?

A screen gives a much better picture than a wall, with improved brightness, sharpness and colour.

What size screen should I buy?

For most living rooms, 100 to 120 inches. Sit about 1 to 1.5 times the screen width away for 4K.

What is an ALR screen?

An ambient light rejecting screen that reflects projector light toward viewers while rejecting room light, for a brighter picture in lit rooms.

Can I use any screen with a UST projector?

No. UST projectors need screens designed for steep projection angles, usually UST ALR screens.

Motorised or fixed-frame?

Fixed-frame gives the flattest picture for dedicated theatres. Motorised screens are ideal when you want the screen hidden when not in use.

Can speakers go behind the screen?

Yes, with an acoustically transparent screen.

Do you install projector screens?

Yes. We install screens and projectors across Mumbai.
