The Ahuja DA-80 is an 8-channel line signal splitter, also called a distribution amplifier, for public address and installed sound systems. It solves a specific and common problem: one programme source, such as a mixer, a media player or a paging console, has to feed several power amplifiers at once. Splitting a line signal with plain Y-cables loads the source, drops the level and invites distortion and hum. The DA-80 instead accepts the source once and provides properly driven outputs for each amplifier, so every zone or speaker group receives the same clean signal.

The DA-80 works in two layouts. Fed with a stereo source it provides four line-level stereo outputs; fed in mono it provides eight line-level mono outputs. That makes one compact unit cover most multi-amplifier buildings, from a school or campus to a mall, a house of worship or a factory paging system.

Level control that prevents distortion

Distribution is only useful if each feed can be set correctly. The DA-80 gives the input its own volume control and gives every output channel a separate control as well, so the amplifier feeding a small office zone and the amplifier feeding a large hall can each be set to the level that zone actually needs, from one front panel. The clip LED shows when the input level is being driven too hard: set the source so the LED stays off in normal programme, and the signal passed to all eight outputs stays below the distortion point. That single indicator removes most of the guesswork from commissioning a multi-zone system.

Power that keeps announcements running

The DA-80 runs from AC mains and can also operate from a 24 V DC battery supply. In PA work that second option matters: announcements and evacuation messages are exactly the audio that must keep working when mains power fails, and a splitter that stops with the mains would silence every amplifier it feeds. Running the distribution point on battery backup keeps the whole chain alive through an outage.

Built for the rack

At 482.6 mm wide the DA-80 mounts in a standard 19 inch equipment rack and occupies only 1U of height, so it sits neatly above the amplifiers it feeds; it can equally be used free-standing as a tabletop unit in a control room. The format suits permanent installations where the unit is wired once, labelled and left in service. Label each output with the zone or amplifier it feeds when you install it, and later maintenance becomes a matter of reading the panel rather than tracing cables.

Using the DA-80 in a system

Connect the mixer’s or player’s line output to the DA-80 input, choose the stereo or mono layout, and run a line cable from each output to its amplifier. Set the input level against the clip LED first, then balance the zones with the individual output controls. Use good-quality shielded line cables and keep them away from mains wiring to avoid induced hum, particularly on long runs to remote amplifier rooms.

The DA-80 works at line level only. It sits before the power amplifiers in the chain; it does not drive loudspeakers directly, and it is not a mixer: sources are combined at the mixer ahead of it, and the DA-80’s job is distribution with per-output level control.
