Onkyo TX-RZ50 AV Receiver

Onkyo TX-RZ50 – A THX Certified 9.2-Channel Receiver With Dirac Live at Its Core

The Onkyo TX-RZ50 is a 9.2-channel AV receiver from the company’s flagship RZ series, built for home theatres that take calibration seriously. It delivers 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms, carries THX Certified Select status, and – unusually at this level – includes Dirac Live room correction, the measurement-based system more often found on processors costing far more. With 11.2 channels of processing, it can run a full Dolby Atmos layout today and expand with an external amplifier later.

HDMI 2.1 throughout means 8K video and 4K gaming at 120 Hz pass through untouched, while the streaming and multi-zone features make it a whole-home hub as well as a cinema engine.

Key features

• 9.2 amplified channels at 120 W per channel into 8 ohms
• Dirac Live room correction included for full-range system calibration
• THX Certified Select, tested for cinema reference levels in real rooms
• 11.2-channel processing with preamp outputs for external power amplifiers
• Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced and Auro-3D decoding
• HDMI 2.1 with 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM for gaming
• Works with Sonos, Chromecast built-in, AirPlay 2 and DTS Play-Fi streaming
• Bi-directional Bluetooth for receiving streams and sending to headphones

Dirac Live, explained

Every room distorts what a speaker produces: walls reinforce some frequencies, cancel others and smear timing with reflections. Dirac Live measures the system from multiple positions around your seating and builds correction filters that address both frequency response and impulse response – not just how loud each frequency is, but how cleanly it arrives. Bass tightens, dialogue clarity improves and the surround field locks together, because the speakers are finally working with the room rather than against it.

Receivers at this price usually ship with simpler EQ systems that flatten a curve on paper. Dirac is the tool enthusiasts seek out deliberately, and Onkyo including it is the RZ50’s defining advantage.

Power and headroom

The high-current amplifier design behind the RZ badge matters with real speakers: it holds control of demanding loads through loud passages instead of thinning out, which is what the 120-watt rating and THX testing are really certifying. Run 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 Atmos layouts from the internal amplifiers, or use the preamp outputs to add a power amplifier for the front channels and unlock the full 11-channel processing.

Gaming and everyday use

For gamers, 4K at 120 Hz passthrough with variable refresh rate and auto low latency mode means a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or gaming PC connects through the receiver with no compromise and no cable swapping. Day to day, voice control, Sonos integration and Bluetooth headphone transmission make the RZ50 easy to live with between film nights.

If you have invested in good speakers and want the electronics – and the room correction – to do them justice, the TX-RZ50 is where Onkyo’s range gets serious.
