Description
HDMI ARC to Optical Audio Converter
This HDMI ARC to Optical Audio Converter is an unbranded audio extractor that solves one specific, common problem: a television whose only audio output is its HDMI ARC port, and a soundbar, amplifier or speaker system that has no ARC input. The converter connects to the TV’s ARC port, takes the audio return channel signal, and re-presents it on the connections older and simpler audio equipment actually has — an optical SPDIF output, a coaxial digital output and a 3.5 mm analogue AUX output — so TV sound plays through the audio system you already own.
The situation arises constantly in real living rooms. A newer television drops the optical output its predecessor had, or a perfectly good amplifier, soundbar or powered speaker from a few years ago predates ARC entirely. Replacing either device over a connector is wasteful; the mismatch is electrical, not a failure. This converter is the bridge: one small box between the TV and the audio system, after which broadcast channels, streaming apps running on the TV, and sources routed through the TV all reach the external system instead of the television’s own small speakers.
Key features
- Extracts audio from a TV’s HDMI ARC connection
- Optical SPDIF output for soundbars, amplifiers and speakers with optical input
- Coaxial digital output for audio systems with a coaxial connection
- 3.5 mm AUX analogue output for speakers and other analogue equipment
- Acts as an ARC audio converter and splitter between TV and audio system
- Keeps existing soundbars and amplifiers in service with newer TVs
Three outputs, one per kind of system
The three outputs cover the realistic range of equipment this converter will meet. Optical is the most common digital input on soundbars and AV amplifiers and is the natural first choice. Coaxial digital serves amplifiers and converters that offer that connection instead — electrically the same class of digital audio over a different plug. The 3.5 mm AUX output is the universal fallback: analogue stereo for powered speakers, older amplifiers and anything with a line input. Having all three on one adapter means the same box survives a change of soundbar or a move between rooms, instead of being tied to a single system’s input panel.
What ARC requires
ARC is a feature of a specific HDMI port, not of every port on the TV: the television must have an HDMI socket labelled ARC, and ARC output usually needs to be switched on in the TV’s audio settings before the converter receives anything. That check — find the ARC-labelled port, enable ARC in the menu — is the whole compatibility test for the television side. On the audio side, the requirement is simply one of the three inputs the converter provides. Where a TV has neither an ARC port nor any other audio output, no converter of this type can create one, so confirming the ARC port exists is the step to take before ordering.
In a home theatre setup
For wall-mounted televisions the arrangement is particularly tidy: a single HDMI cable to the ARC port carries the TV’s sound out to the converter near the audio equipment, rather than a separate audio cable run alongside. Once connected, volume and everyday operation follow the TV’s own settings as far as the connected system allows, and the television’s internal speakers can be switched off in its menu so sound comes only from the external system. The converter itself is a fit-and-forget component — no configuration beyond the TV’s ARC setting, and no role in the picture path at all.
If your TV and your sound system speak different connection languages, this converter is the translator: ARC in, optical, coaxial or analogue out, and your existing audio equipment back in service.
